I have a 99 jeep grand cherokee 4.7 that is overheating whenin traffic or at a stoplight or drivethru. i have a check engine code p01491 . i have replaced the fan relay.i hhave jumped the fan it works ....

The relay gets power on the gray wire from a 40amp fuse. The relay is grounded and gets a power signal from the PCM on the dark blue and pink wire. The PCM signals the relay if the engine temp reaches 220 degrees or the ac is turned on and it works.
You would need to have a scanner or the means to read engine temp to find out if the computer is signaling the relay on when the coolant temp reaches 220 - 225 degrees.

Jeep keeps overheating replaced relay

A mechanic would use a scanner to check the engine temp sensor.
The temp sensor tells the computer what the engine temp is and the computer activates the fan relay when the temp reaches about 230 degrees.
Since you said relay I am assuming your Jeep has an electric radiator fan.

How do I know if the fan relay has actually gone out in my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

Is the fan coming on when it overheats? If it is than its not the fan relay. It is likely the thermostat. If the fan is not coming on than it is likely the relay. They fail in two ways. One they do not turn on the fan and two they keep the fan on all the time. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Thank you for using!

Hello , i had replace the radiator fan relay and the fan wont kick on. i had jump the the fan with the battery to see if the fan motor is still working ,which it still is. is there anything else i would...

Most fans are designed to turn on only when the engine temp reaches a certain degrees and even then it will only turn on till it brings the engine temp down then it will turn off and it will cycle in this manner.I ask you why did you change out the fan relay was your jeep overheating?

1999 Dodge caravan 3.3L motor. problem: Cooling

the fan should only come on if a/c high pressure is above 200-250psi. or th eeng is HOT +220f... the relay I think is located at the lower left corner of core support, and common to fail.

My 1999 jeep gcl ac line burst and now my radiator fan does not work. Do i need to replace the fan relay or might it be just the fuse?

you should always check the fuse's first, that is a starting point. The coolant fan relays are common to go out in the vehicle.

Can you see the cooling fans come on? When the engine gets to 212 degrees the fans should come on. To test the fans, with the engine running turn the A/C on high, the fans should come on .
The system also has a 212 switch that screws into the intake manifold. This is what turns on the fans with no A/C.
I hope this helps you.
