Question about 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

Car stalling with air conditioner on

I have a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4 liter automatic that I purchased new. My problem is that when it is really hot (and it is in Kamloops where we live ) and the air conditioner is on, after a while maybe half an hour the engine quits. If you try to start it again it misses and black smoke pours out the exhaust, but if you let it sit for 10 minuets it runs fine. I have had this into repair shops and dealers from new and nobody can solve. To date I have replaced the fuel pump and complete distributor, Any suggestions? Thanks Harvey

Hello, it sounds like the ECT (engine coolant temperature sensor) is failing, the sensor communicates with your computer and has affect on fuel usage, it is common for bad sensor to allow too much fuel and cause cylinder flooding, this in turn will lower cylinder compression and cause miss, black smoke, check engine lights, easy too overlook without propper diagnostic equipment, easy too change and fairly cheap! good luck, marty

The lower speeds are controlled by a resistor block. That's what needs to be replace. It's usually located next to the blower. It will have electrical wires connected to it. High speed bypasses the block so it alway works.
If you want to replace it then;
) Disconnect the battery negative terminal if the vehicle have air bags. Wait 2 minutes for system to discharge.
) Remove the kick block on the passenger side. )Remve the glove box ) Remove the bolts holding the blower motor resistor. Push the red lock up and press down on the click ) Pull the block out. ) Install new block and reverse steps above.
