Question about 2002 Volkswagen Jetta TDI

96 Golf reads hot after replacing Coolant-engine feels cool.

We replaced the coolant, then the heater core shot! we bypassed the heater core (to drive it), and put more water in it. ran fine as long as i didnt go over 55 on freeway. THEN we put VW coolant in it and now its overheating. cant get 1 block and its at 230! we pull over & engine is cool to touch, but idiot lite reads 230. we've been burping the system but it takes forever! My Bro is a great mechanic but this is systems & im thinkn its over his head. Fans are on (hardwired so theyre on all the time cause the O-heating). Its as if there is no flow of coolant mix, although we did unhook hoses & theyre full. Ive replaced coolant flange. - was reading a post bout the water pump propellor might be broke....could the water pump be bad? Is it casue we bypassed the H-core? does it just need a big-*** burp? should i just replace the themostat AND water pump? i need my car for work, HELP! :)

Had similar problem on my 2000 cabrio---hit the dashboard lightly above the temp gauge and it dropped to normal reading---the temp gauge spring was oversprung from the previous overheat problem I had---as long as the engine is cool --then so are you

How do I determine why 2003 Pontiac Grand Prix blows no heat with step by step instructions?


The most common reason is the coolant is low.
Check coolant level when vehicle is cool.
If coolant is low start vehicle and fill radiator with coolant.
if coolant was needed high probability there is a leak
look at all cooling system hoses, thermostat housing, all over the engine to try and find leak and repair.

if coolant isnt low, make sure its not really dirty...reddish mud colored. If it is the radiator is probably clogged and needs to be flushed thoroughly..then refilled with coolant.

there will be two heater hoses coming out of firewall..they are connected to the heater core and one hose directs flow of coolant to the heater core, other hose directs flow away from heater core..start vehicle and run until engine is warm then feel each heater hose as close to the firewall as possible..if one hose is hot and other is cool..the heater core is clogged and will probably require replacement. also look in passenger floorboard if coolant is leaking there..heater core requires replacement.

if you check these things and find none of the issues, let me know, and I will tell you what to check next.

What causes hyundai Elantra 2002 tempature gauge fluctuates between normal and hot


The thermostat "seals" the cool coolant giving up (rejecting) heat in the radiator & heater core from the hot coolant absorbing heat in the running engine "block".

When the coolant in the engine reaches a specific temperature (180 ~ 195 degrees) as determined by the value selected by manufacturer or when replaced, it opens and allows the hot coolant in the engine block to be pumped out to the radiatot & heater core for cooling and the cool coolant in the radiator / heater core is pumped into the engine block - replacing the hot coolant. The thermostat senses cool coolant in the engine block and seals shut until the temperature of the coolant in the engine block rises to 180 ~ 195 degrees again. This process continues over and over for as long as needed.

You should check to make sure that the coolant level in the reservoir / radiator is sufficient by checking when cold. Do NOT remove a radiator cap when it is hot! With the cap off, start the engine and add additional coolant as the engine warms up to normal operating temperature. If coolant levels are ok, the trouble could be related to the thermostat or possibly a faulty temperature sending switch. This means that the temperature of the coolant is fine - but the switch or sensor that converts the temperature to a voltage for the gauge on yur dashboard is the problem.

If the temperature is fluctuating up and down, you should have it fixed. Good luck!

Car heater not geting warm


first of all. check coolant level. One way to tell if the coolant is circulating through the heater core is to feel both heater hoses. Both the inlet and outlet return hoses should feel hot when the engine is at normal operating temperature and the heater is on. some vehicles have a "bleeder" valve (or more than one valve) on the thermostat housing and/or certain hose connections. Opening the valve(s) allows air to escape as the system is filled. The valve(s) should then be closed when coolant starts to dribble out the valve. On vehicles that lack these special bleeder valves, it may be necessary to temporarily loosen the heater outlet hose so air can bleed out as the system is filled. A plugged heater core. Accumulated crud in the cooling system may plug the core and block the flow of coolant. The only cure here is to replace the heater core. if above is ok. replace thermostat.

I have a 1999 sierra 1500 4 w drive truck and my heat core blows only gold air. can anybody tell me what is the problem?


Before assuming the heater core is blown check the following.

1. Check coolant level while engine is cold.
2. Leave the radiator cap off and let the engine run. See if you can see the coolant circulate
when the engine is brought up to temperature.
3. Check the temperature gauge inside and note if the engine temp is correct.
4 Does the engine overheat?
5. Feel the heater hoses and check if they get hot.
6. Can you smell antifreeze inside the cab?

LOOKING AT HEATER CORE TOP HOSE COOLANT FLOW IN BACK OUT THROUGH THE BOTTOM HEATER CORE HOSE CHECK WATER PUMP BYPASS HOSE SEE IF IT GETS HOT.IF NOT COULD BE BLOCKAGE AT BYPASS HOSE FROM WATER PUMP OR WATER COULD BE FAULTY GETTING TOO WEAK PUMP COOLANT THROUGH SYSTEM.IF COOLANT GETTING HOT GOING TO HEATER CORE THE HEATER CORE AND COOLANT SYSTEM NEED FLUSHING OUT.

Replaced thermostat in my son's 1991 Jetta 1.8L, but still cold air coming out of heater.


Check the lines coming into the heater core. With the engine running, touch both lines, they should both be hot. If not, you have a blockage in the system. If they're both hot, you may need to replace the heater core.

I have a 2000 Jeep Cherokee and the heater does not heat


Check to see if the temp door is changing to heat,If that is fine,Then make sure the thermostat is good,maybe just replace it,and refill the radiator,and reservoir with coolant.The heater hoses going into the heater core need to be checked,while the engine is real hot,to make sure the heater hose going in the heater core,and out of the heater core are both to warm to hold by the naked hand.If only one of them is hot,and the other one is warm,to cold to the touch,then remove the heater hoses from the heater core,and use a water hose to flush the heater core out.Put the water hose in one side and flush the heater core out with the force of the water hose pressure.Then do the other heater core pipe the same way.Then replace the heater hoses back on the heater core,and refill the radiator.Make sure to get enough coolant back in the radiator.If there is not enough,the coolant will not flow threw the heater core and put out heat.I hope this is helpful,and you can do the work yourself.You may want to check those heater hose first thing.And change the thermostat anyway,sense you will have some coolant lose from flushing the heater core.If this helps,please let us know,thank you.

1986 VW Golf heater blows cold air


The heater in your car depends upon a flow of hot coolant going through the heater core in order to get hot air into the car. If the heater core is partially plugged, it will restrict the flow. If you have a head gasket that is putting exhaust into the cooling system, it will eventually get into the heater core. When this happens there is no coolant in the heater core to make the air warm. If the water pump vanes have corroded away the result will be very poor coolant circulation causing the heater to not blow hot air. If your car is equipped with a heater control valve that is not functioning properly, the coolant flow will be restricted. One or a combination of these factors is likely the culprit in your case.
if the car is not overheating, the thermostat is working fine.... replace or flush the heater core multiple times to try and eliminate sediment build-up.

if engine temp. is good. i would rec. good flush of the heater core disconnect both heater hoses and flush core in both directions. (pressure washer works good)
