Question about 1996 Nissan Maxima

2 Answers

A/C compressor cycles on/off. It does this sporadically. Sometimes it will run properly for and hour or so. Then it quits and cycles on/off every couple minutes but only stays on for about 1/2 a second. Compressor and receiver dryer were replaced and system re-charged. We are suspect of the pressure switch mounted on the receiver dryer but wonder what other switches may be shutting the compressor down. When we "hot wire" the compressor it runs continuously and blows COLD air with no apparent issues. What are the various scenarios that would shut the compressor off when set to max cooling?

You could have a slow leak and the system is low on R134 and soon will stop running. The other thing to look for is the relay to the A/C compressor and switch it with an other relay or just replace it since there not that expensive. The pressure switch is an easy replacement to do, you just have to be quick so you don't lose all the R134 out of the system. Recap, recharge the system and get a proper reading on your high and low side A/C lines. To much R134 will also give you the same problem. Good luck and hope this helps.

The a/c on my 2010 Mercury Milan quits blowing after about 2 hours of driving. Any ideas?

Sounds to me like the A/C clutch is no good and out of adjustment. You should goto your nerrest junkyard and get a used assembly take the clutch off then you learn how it comes off and install it on yours the save the pump for later use if needed. The clutch should only have a .010 air gap after install between th inner elctro magnet and the clutch plate it's self.

Hello: Sounds like you have an intermittent cycle switch. There is a silver can under the hood on the passenger side. On the side towards the fender there is a switch screwed into it, the switch has an electrical connector with 2 wires. Disconnect wires, screw switch out (counterclockwise) you do not have to remove freon. Make sure switch has new "O" ring, put some light oil on it and screw back on. (do no over tighten) What this switch does is cycle the compressor so the A/C don't freeze up.

Check the level switch at the back of the car - this turns the compressor on and off as the ride height changes. It may have come loose, is stuck or faulty.

My ac does not work properly when I add freon the ac will work well for about 5 minuted then will blow warm air hoping some one could give me an idea what might be wrong, ie what to replace to fix it.

does the compressor keep cycling on and off ? if so then it is low on refrigerant causing the cycling, sometimes you have to bypass the compressor pressure switch to stop it from cycling long enough to get enough refrigerant in the system, but of course you need to check for a leak if you are trying to recharge the unit then add a refrigerant with dye solution in it to locate any leaks, note leaks and then evacuate system amd rapair the leak source and then draw the system down add the proper compressor oil or refreigerant with oil in it. you may want to have a qualified AC repair facility do this , so they can properly evacuate and recover the refrigerant material... thanks , please rate my help...

A/C sporadic compressor. Bypassed high and low with paper clip. Pressures good has Freon. Clutch tests OK. Vehicle runs for maybe 10 min or some times 30 then A/C shuts down. Maybe A/C will fire up...

This is just a suggestion but you should check to see if you have a thermostatic control switch in your evaporator this could be the cause if the intermittent problem. The switch is actually used tokeep your ac from freezing up i believe.
