1991 overheating Towncar

Me again. Overheating 1991 Town Car. Trying to check fan clutch. Does have resistance, moves about 1/2 turn when pushed by hand, but jiggled the fan itself and it does have a small wobble. Anyone think I need the heater core flushed? Car gets hot quickly and boils and steams out the expansion overflow. ALSO, I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THE EXPANSION TANK (WHICH HAS A 'RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP' ON IT WHEN IT ALSO HAS AN OUTLET HOSE (FOR OVERLFOW??) THAT IS JUST OPEN TO AIR. What's the point of a pressure cap when there is an opening in the expansion tank anyway? Help!?

Your pressure cap is used to maintain pressure in cooling system.over flow outlet is to let pressure off radiator when engine overheating.if clutch fan have resistance.its good long as the silicone oil isnt leaking from it.replace your thermostat.

If car heats up quickly and overheats , the problem is the thermostat. The thermostat stays closed and traps coolant in the engine untill it reaches about 185 degrees , than the thermostat opens and allows coolant to flow to the radiator where it is cooled by airflow. ( airflow while driving is usually sufficient ) while idling , or in slow trafic , the fan keeps air moving through the rad. The heater core is strictly for heat in the winter inside the car. The thermostat is the most likely cause of the problem , and even if it was good before , the overheat / boil situation likely cooked it anyways. I am assuming the water pump is still getting turned by a belt. No water circulation by pump would cause same symptom as bad thermostat. Overflow and expansion bottles are designed several different ways on different cars , but the theory is that as the engine heats up and the coolant expands , it goes to the tank. Later , as engine cools down after being shut off , coolant contracts. Radiator is replenished by coolant returning from expansion bottle.

bad thermostat, electric fan if equipped not working, clogged radiator, clutch fan if equipped slipping (when turning fan blade by hand it should have a slight "resistance" to it...it should not turn freely with no resistance...fan belt slipping?...radiator cap bad?...

Trying to install clutch fan on 1991 ford mustang gt. When trying to bolt clutch to water pump the whole thing turns.


tighten the bolts as tight as you can until it tries to turn.go ahead and put the belt on an then try and tighten more the belt will help hold the pulley from turning

Two weeks ago on vacation car over heated a shop replaced the thermostat that was july 4 it is now july 13 and it is overheating again,PLEASE HELP!!!!!!! THIS IS A 2007 LINCOLN MKZ


My best advice is to ask a local mechanic to have a look for you as the cause could be a multitude of problems but i would suspect that the fact that when the thermostat stuck it has caused damage to the head gasket and you may even need the head skimmed as well so be prepared for a expensive job or trade this vehicle in quick

undo all of the bolts holding the fan clutch in and remove, very simple task, but using a special tool can expedite the process

My 1991 Lincoln Town Car keeps overheating even after replacing the radiator, what could be the problem


I would first suggest a cooling system pressure test. This will tell you if you have a coolant leak. If the coolant system holds pressure then your next place would be to make sure the cooling fans are working or if this is still using a fixed fan make sure the clutch on the fan is engaging.
If all of these thing test out then I would replace the thermostat. After replacing the thermostat you should be able to see water moving in the radiator after the car reaches operating temperature. If you don't see any movement then you will likely have to replace the water pump.

Hello,Be sure the compressor clutch is cycling. Also, check the orifice tube, evaporator and condensor for blockages. Freon level should be checked with manifold gauges and compared to specs.

I have 2003 grand cherokee with 140000 miles that overheats at idle. as soon as i start moving again, the temp goes back to normal.


You have two fan's on your truck, 1 is a fan clutch runs with the drive belt, 2 elec fan motor, with test light and engine running at normal temp, just a little bit above 1/2 way on your temp gauge check voltage at elec. cooling fan harness if you have voltage at one of the two wire's and fan don't turn on, bad cooling fan motor, on the fan clutch after you check voltage at elec. fan motor turn engine off, with your hand spin drive belt fan if it spin's freely bad fan clutch, replace it.Also check cooling level.Hope this was very helpful

Over heating, not thermostat. Lower hose not hot but upper hose is. How does one check the fwn clutch or the radiator to see it they are working properly?


You can check the fan clutch by feel. When your engine is cold (and off) try to turn the fan with your hand. Warm the engine to normal operating temp. and try to spin the fan by hand again. If you notice a lot more resistance when the motor is hot then it is OK. You can also listen to the fan when you start a cold motor. At start up you should easily hear the fan pushing air for about the first 30-60 seconds. You shoul take the radiator in for a pressure test. Hope this helps.
