Check the transmission cooler. If the transmission starts to run hot , it will start to shift hard. The cooler could be clogged and the transmission is not being properly cooled. Also check the fluid you used. GM transmissions can require a special additive that is in the fluid. especially if it has any type of positraction or traction control.

SOURCE: Trans shifts very hard after 5 minutes of stop and go traffic

A reason for hard shifting could be a problem with many things with various degrees of seriousness. It could be your ATF( automatic transmission fluid) is low or broken down and old. This would cause the hardness and the reason for stop and go traffic effecting it. Another possibility is your transmission is just shot, and the timing gears inside are worn and not properly shifting at the correct RPM causing a **** during shifting.

Some possibilties, not all!

SOURCE: VERY HARD SHIFTS AFTER ENGINE IS WARM.

Your going to have to get the car scanned for the DTC code. The Check engine light indicates that the ECM has detected an issue with the cars engine or transmission performance. Your hard shifting could be the failure to the Pressure control solenoid (PCS), that would be a DTC code P1811. The PCS is located under the trans axle side cover assembly. IF you go to Auto Zone, they can scan your car free of charge and can give you the step by step instruction to replacing the part that may have failed. Good luck and keep me posted, be glad to help.

SOURCE: fixed check engine trouble code but light with same code comes on

Your transmission problem could be related to the TPS sensor. The TPS sensor indicated to the PCM when and what gear the transmission should be in. As for the Lucas and other additives to the transmission may be doing it more harm then good, As the transmission oil is thicker, the transmission line pressure increases. The PCM try's to compensate for that by letting the converter lock up clutch to slip and the fluid retention in the solenoid to change gears stick causing it to shudder between gear shifts. Recap, Check the TPS sensor readings and the Wire Harness. Look for loose connections and corrosion that may not be giving the proper readings to the ECM. Rescan the car for any DTC codes and most transmission chop can do that for you if your going to get it serviced there anyways. Have the transmission fluid flushed and filter changed, and have them do a transmission line pressure checked, there are additives out there to keep the fluid from foaming which is ok, but changing the fluid's weigh can cause transmission failure. Good luck and hope this helps and keep me posted, be glad to help.

SOURCE: 2003 Buick Rendezvous Transmission Problem.

I would try changing the filter, I've seen some that should be changed every 20,000 miles. You might want to check for any DTC codes stored for the transmission. Auto Zone will do it for free. If there is a code that might point you in the right direction.

you will need to replace the 3-4 shift solenoid inside the tranny - either it works or doesn't - alternatively it could be the wire... not a big deal, but the shops charge for that..

Hi,
The solenoid directs fluids to the governor and valve body( inside the ****** ). Better bring that to the nearest garage to check the fluid and the filter, just to see if fluids flows freely. The solenoid can be check by applying power just to see if it still works.
Hope that helps you out!

One thing that is rarely posted is any repairs and or instructions on doing so. For instance the Solenoid pack is often suggested as a replacement, and you can buy them on e-bay, but no instruction on how to replace one. Amazing. I can fix anything! rec check fluid first. If trans fluid hasn't been changed in last 30,000 miles change fluid, filter and pan gasket. At that time inspect for foreign materials in bottom of pan or on magnet if you have one. If truck has over 100K and fluid was never changed you may have more problems if changing the fluid.
