Question about 1999 Hyundai Sonata
If you set the hand brake then the red brake light on the dash should come on to remind you that it is on. if it is properly adjusted and the cables don't bind that light should go out when you release the hand brake. neither condition should cause the check engine light to come on. that light being on probably has nothing to do with the hand brake. you need to have somebody that has a code retriever tool take a look and see what code has set to turn the light on. most of the big chain car parts store will do it for free, idea being that they can then sell you some parts. you don't have to buy anything, but that's why they will do it. once you know what it is then you can decide what to do about it. oh and it's not a good idea to use hand brake in place of foot pedal, but i think you already know that. hope that helps
