Brake lights erractic on 1996 Monte Carlo

I have a 1996 Monte Carlo. Sometime the brake lights work, but usually they don't. I replaced the brake light switch and have checked all fuses and bulbs. What else could be the problem?

It could be wiring, a bad ground, a defective plug to the tail-light, the tail-light itself, a loose fuse, or a dirty or faulty connection at the hazard switch. If it is the hazard switch you can try to actuate it (on and off) 6 to 12 times. This may help clean off the contacts and let the brake lights, return to normal.

Sounds like good information but did not do it.
I checked the voltage at the fuse (not blown) and the brake switch. Voltage at both places. No voltage at the lights. None of the three stop lights work but the hazzard lights work just fine. I have no wiring info so I do not know where the connectors are or the color of the wires. The light swith has near zero ohms when closed and the bulbs are good. Again I measure no voltage at the tail light socket. I understand the two filiment system.

You need to replace the stop light switch. Most are mounted on the upper portion of the brake pedal, on some vehicles they are attached to the master cylinder. It's an $8 part.

Turn signal switch. With you foot on the brake have someone stand behind the car. Wiggle the turn signal lever and see if the the brake lights flicker.

My hazards and brake lights work but my turn signals do not

ok my grandmother has a 1996 Monte Carlo and she had no brake lights and the turn signals barely worked! there is a part in the steering wheel that controls all of this and it cost about 220.oo dollars when it was all said and done cause you have to order the part from General Motors. Best of luck to you!!!!!!!
