The CD Changer will not work and shows ERR 1 and I
The CD Changer will not work and shows ERR 1 as it moves to each CD. I've cleaned all the CD's and still the same error. The radio with the Bose system works fine, but not the rear CD changer. Do I need a new CD changer or a new radio? Thanks for any comments or suggestions.

The fault is actually inside the CD changer, when one disc is selected the changer moves the gearing inside to slot from one CD to the other. While this operation is happening the selection arm jams !! Then giving an error at the radio display..
To fix the problem, disconnect the CD changer from the trunk of the car, take off the top plastic slide cover, with a small screwdriver slowly move the gearing so that the CD disc holder will move back to the load - unload position.
Pop out the CD holder.
Replace unit, reconnect the optic and power lead, switch on radio and the unit will work again,
I don't think the cd changer mechanism is ok if it reads err continuously or with more than a few cd's.The lens may be dirty, but in many cases it may need a new cd-changer mechanism or another cd-changer altogether.
It is a internal CD Changer Problem, there is no way to get them out unless you dissassemble the Changer. Your best bet is to remove the Changer and take it into a Car Audio Repair Shop and have them take a look at it.
The in-trunk units have a tendancy to go bad. you can take the cover plastic interior cover off to access the CD changer, un bolt the changer, and visualy inspect the two rollers for debris, or missing /broken gears that move the rollers to take the CD from the CD cartrage to the player. if that looks fine, chances are that the laser went bad (common in rear mount units) and you can order a new one from Jeep, or you can remove it and update the in-dash head to an aftermarket of your choice (& yes you steering wheel controls will still work). you could also fit a more modern MP3 unit where the Changer was.
Have a 2005 Freelander and the battery died. When I re-charged the battery, the CD changer had a CD ERR 1 message. Could not eject or load a CD and the radio worked. I turned off the radio and pulled off the cover on top of the CD changer. I removed the two screws that hold the frame around the CD changer. I turned the CD back on and the CD went through a test on each CD. I know this solution might not work for everyone, but it worked for me
This sounds like the CD is dirty, try getting a CD Cleaner disk, they are economical enough.
After years of use the lens on the CD can get dirty, one or two cleanings sometimes clears this up.
If you smoke in the car the lens will need continual cleaning every 3 mos or so.
