Is there a special tool required to remove the oil pressure switch (sending unit) on a Pontiac Sunfire with a 2.4L engine. What actually fails when these start leaking?

They make a oil pressuer senser socket . you dont have to have it to change the sensor a deep socket will do just fine

Oil pressure guage reading max


Remove the sending unit on the engine and check the oil press with a test gauge, if the oil pressure is good on the test gauge replace the oil press sending unit on the engine. Note the removal and installation of the sending unit requires a special socket, that is available at any auto parts store, you will likely need the deep version of that socket for a Chrysler product.

High oil pressure


First thing is find out if the oi pressure is really high. Remove the oil pressure sending unit and hook up a oil pressure test gauge kit, if the pressure is within normal then replace the sending unit first. (requires a special socket)

Where is the oil pressure switch/sendor located?


Oil pressure can be checked at the sending unit passage with an externally mounted mechanical oil pressure gauge. To get accurate results from the test, make sure you follow the manufacturer's recommendations and compare your findings to specifications.
Testing the Oil Pressure Gauge
  • Test the gauge by grounding the wire that leads to the sending unit on the block.
  • When the wire is disconnected from the sending unit with the key switch on, the needle on the oil pressure gauge should be either all the way high or all the way low. Grounding the wire should make the needle move to the opposite side of the gauge from where it was before the wire was grounded. If the vehicle is equipped with an oil pressure light, touching the wire to ground and then removing the wire from ground should turn the light on and off.
  • If either happens, the gauge and wiring are good and the sending unit is at fault.
Testing Oil Pressure
Pressure can be tested by temporarily installing an oil pressure gauge in place of the sending unit. Before testing, look up the oil pressure specifications for your vehicle in the appropriate service manual.
  • Bring the engine up to operating temperature.
  • Now shut the engine off.
  • Locate the oil pressure sending unit; usually it is on the lower side of the engine block.
  • Disconnect the wire from the sending unit and use an open ended wrench to remove the sender. Using pliers can damage the unit.

  • Tighten the oil pressure test gauge into the hole in the block where the sender was removed.

WARNING Be extremely careful when working near a running engine. Always wear safety goggles or glasses with side shields when working around moving machinery and be sure that your clothing is not loose.

    • Make sure the engine speed is set to specifications for testing pressure.

I have a 99 Ford F150 with a 5.4. It will start and run fine, no codes. After 2 minutes of running the oil pressure goes to zero. Shut off the engine and restart the oil pressure will go up to normal for...


Start by verifying the oil pressure sending unit. It is quite common for a bad sensor to act erratically, such as you have described. Acquire an oil pressure gauge and install it in an appropriate location, perhaps in place of the oil sending unit if a more convenient location is not available, and run the engine. Observe the pressure on the test gauge at various RPM and over a period of several minutes as the engine warms. If pressure on the gauge is good, then you have a problem either with the oil pressure sending unit, in the circuitry, or instrument panel gauge. However, the problem is most likely the sending unit. Note: the sending unit often requires a special socket, which may be obtained at any auto parts store. Also, if you don't own a test gauge or unwilling to purchase, many auto parts stores now rent tools, others even loan tools provided an adequate security deposit is made.

HI.There are only two possible issue here that will cause this to occur. The first issue will be a failing, or damaged oil pressure switch(sending unit). The sending unit is responsible for transmitting the correct information to the instrument that displays the pressure readings. If there is a wiring issue, or the sending unit has failed, this will cause the oil light to illuminate. In this case, the sending unit must be replaced. Ok, the next issue will be a failed oil pump. This will be the most common issue, in this case, due to the actual mileage on this particular vehicle. A oil pump can fail mechanically(gear failure). This device is not repairable, and must be replaced. The easiest way to isolate the issue, will be to preform a pressure test on the engine. There is a special tool, used by your mechanic, that will allow you, or him, to extract the true pressure readings for the engine, during idle. If the pressure test confirms that the oil pressure is low, or weak, this will lead to a failed oil pump. Now, if the pressure test indicates that the engine is running at optimal pressure range, this will indicate that the oil pressure switch(sending unit), is faulty. It must be replaced.

Oil Pressure Switch Operation:

When the oil level is over a pre-set limit, the diaphragm opens the switch, turning off the light. When level is below the pre-set limit, the dash light comes on. In later model cars, if the oil pressure drops, the switch turns off the fuel pump, to stop the engine and limit damage to internal parts. Oil pressure switches can be grouped into two categories, units for electrical gauges and for mechanical gauges.

Where is the oil pressure sensor located


Oil pressure switch or oil pressure sending unit.most cars have both.If it has one wire it is an oil pressure sending unit. if it has a plug with 2 or more wires it is an oil pressure switch and sends a signal to the inboard computer. Remove the wire either a nut or usually a plug.some sending units take a special socket but if you can get a wrench on it turn it counter clock wise and unscrew it. When you get the new one it will have a red material on the threads, this is a sealant.thread the new switch snug and put you plug back on.The sending unit or oil pressure switch is located next to the oil filter. IMPORTANT: Clean the area around the sensor and Distributor before removal. Do not allow debris to enter the engine.

  3. Remove the engine oil pressure sensor using the J 41712. IMPORTANT: Note the alignment of the engine oil pressure sensor fitting prior to removal.

  2. Install the engine oil pressure sensor fitting, if removed. Tighten Tighten the engine oil pressure sensor fitting to 15 N.m (11 lb ft) .

  2. Connect the engine oil pressure sensor electrical connector.

5.3 L Yukon XL oil pressure problems


Well first the GM oil pressure sending units are notorious for false readings, so what you must do is remove the oil pressure sending unit and plug in a test mechanical gage to verify the engine has acceptable oil pressure, after you are certain the pressure is ok replace the sending unit, it requires a special socket to remove it, the socket is about $5.00 USD. There is a deep socket and a shallow, so check the sending unit for the correct socket fit.

Oil pressure switch


Pressure switch is usually located near the oil filter and generally has two wires on it. Best way to check it is by putting a manual oil pressure gauge in it's place and reading actual oil pressure. If your symptoms are no oil pressure reading or abnormal readings, with no tapping noises (or worse) from engine then it likely is the switch. Most require a special socket to remove but the sending units are not terribly expensive.
