Check for

vacuum leaks on intake manifold,

the air tube between the air filter.

intake manifold vacuum hose.

===
clean throttle plate with Berryman carburator cleaner

SEE sample picture HERE
===

Also remove carbon built up behind the EGR valve and the EGR passage tube.

===

Vacuum leak WILL offset the intended 14.7 to 1 air fuel ratio.

More un-metered air (leaks) will lean out the fuel mixture.

Use small amount of Berryman carb clearer at potential air leak area will help you identify trouble spot.

At idle, just spray and listen for the RPM surge.

The in-rush of carb clearer will increase the RPM on the motor.

Record the problem spot(s) and address it later.

===

EGR carbon built up require 2+ hours to clean from start to finish.

You will need a new EGR base gasket before your start.

Locate and remove the EGR valve after the vehicle is cool down.

Carefully record the connector and vacuum line (for older vehicle) location by drawing an easily to follow diagram.

Remove the EGR valve.

Inspect the location of the carbon built-up inside the valve and the EGR passage tube.

SOAK these areas with WD-40 spary.

You will need a small screwdriver, cloth hanger and lot of newspaper and time to get this cleaning done right.

RE-SOAK the carbon and let it sit for over-night will also help.

One the last round, pass a shop vacuum of the EGR valve and the passage pipe.

Install the new EGR gasket and connectors.

Allow the vehicle to warm up outdoor to burn up any remaining WD-40.

Take it for a test drive.

Yes the egr systems get carbon build up in them which restrics flow and then tripps the light. you can replace the egr and then you have to clean the rest of the system out like the egr tube ect sometimes part of the intake system. get a print out of egr system for yours and go from there you can try to clean the egr its self but it is best to just replace. you can most of the time test them with a hand held vacuum pump to make sure its open and closing. it the egr system gets to clogged it can cause serious drivability issues. just make sure the engine is cold before you touch the egr system.

Check engine light comes code p1401

Hi Abe, I'm glad to help!

P1401 is an EGR fault code: Differential Pressure Feedback EGR Circuit High Input. This can be caused by several things. EGR Valve is bad, Flow through the valve is restricted due to carbon build-up. Electrical connector OR wiring is damaged somewhere. Check the wiring and the connector at the EGR valve if no damage is found then replace the EGR valve and clean the port holes in the engine and the EGR tube that's running to the valve "IF IT HAS ONE". Clear the codes and drive it and see what happens. Hope this helps and have an awesome day Abe.

Service engine light came on

You need to get the codes to point you in the right direction. If you go to most parts stores they will let you run a scan for free. After you get code/s come back and post and we should be able to help you out a lot better.

Evap code for 1996 Nissan pickup

All you have been doing is clearing the check light on dash &
clearing the obd codes, not diagnosing anything related to
the codes or trying to solve the problem

The Evap Monitor will run when ever it should, based on how
that is programmed into the vehicles computer,no need to drive
80 miles or any miles

You should have a codes for the Evap Problem, if you stop clearing them & that also has nothing to do with an EGR Issue

I have a 96 Geo Metro and the code is P0420 and what does that mean.

this is a catalyst efficiency code meaning your cars computer has indicated a problem with the flow of your catalytic converter located just after the exaust manifold i the exaust system, usally these codes are triggerd by a bad or "lazy" oxygen or O2 sensor, try replacing your 02 sensors if they have some miles on them and this may cure the problem, after the repair you will need to have the check engine light cleared by a shop or auto parts store

Toyota Corolla DX 97 Engine Light EGR valve PLEASE HELP

You can try cleaning the EGR valve and passages with Seafoam. A bottle costs just a few dollars at any auto parts store or discount store. With the engine running, squirt/spray it in through the brake booster hose, or through the PCV hose. This will cause smoke to come out the exhaust. This is normal and will disappear after a few minutes. If Seafoam does not do the trick, then you can still disassemble the EGR valve from the throttle body and clean it with throttle body cleaner.

I am having trouble getting my check light to go off after I had it checked and the EGR valve was replaced. The light comes back on after about 15 miles of driving and the code reads EGR poor flow. I can...

Insufficient EGR Flow Detected

Possible Causes:
DPFE sensor signal circuit is shorted to ground
DPFE sensor VREF circuit is open between sensor and PCM
DPFE sensor downstream hose off or plugged
DPFE sensor hoses both off, loose or damaged
DPFE sensor hoses connected wrong (reversed)
EGR orifice tube is damaged or restricted
PCM has failed
And what sets the code is…….Engine started, engine running in closed loop under steady cruise conditions, and the PCM detected the DPFE sensor input indicated insufficient EGR gas flow. Run the KOER Self-Test, and if DTC P1408 is present, the fault is currently present. This code sets in 2 Trip(s). The light will stay on until the cause is repaired. A bad EGR valve is only on possible cause.

Hope this helps,

Dave

Low flow Egr check engine light

You need to pull your plenum and more than likely the intake and clean out the vaccum port in the intake where the egr pipe connects to the back of the intake. Not sure if you can do it with just pulling the plennum or not though.Having the same prob with my 96 rl.Keeps kicking the insufficient flow to egr valve code at about 30 miles.

I have a 1999 Protege 1.6L with 93,000 miles. And a
1996 1.5L with 170,000 miles.
When my light came on, I got the EGR code read out at Advance Auto ($0). I googled 'Mazda EGR' and found this is frequently due to carbon buildup in the throttle body. It seems the carbon restricts the flow from the EGR, which then calls for a more open valve, and the error code is "excessive flow". Go figure.

Very easy to disassemble throttle body (just check to see where the EGR line is attached to the intake air path, just prior to injector assembly). Sure enough, a clump of carbon around the EGR port in the throttle body. Cleaned it up with a paper clip, Q-tip, and carburetor cleaner. Total cost < $3.
Cleared to code. No light on now, car runs fine.
If your "EGR VALVE" is bad,
you can get one cheap at the url below, and they take Pay-Pal.
Then you can install it of have it installed.
http://www.autoparts123.com/?gclid=CJual4Dv65gCFQS7sgodxk592A

Sometimes...
A less expensive fix is to replace the engine Coolant/Antifreeze "Temp Senser"
This will cut fuel to the injectors if not working properly.
Also replace the engine coolant "Thermostat",
when changing "Temp Senser".
You can pick up both at Auto-Zone for about $35.00.
This fixed our 1996 model. The 1999 model was fixed by replacing the
EGR Valve.

Hope this helps.
