Question about 1992 Chevrolet Suburban

2 Answers

1992 Suburban 1500 with 5.7. Cranks but no spark.

1992 Chevrolet Suburban 1500 with 5.7 with about 165,000 miles. Cranks fine and getting a strong fuel injection, but no spark. Replaced ignition coil and that did not help. Any suggestions?

About 1 week ago, it died (for the first time in 17 years) while idling. Then started right up the first try about 5 minutes later and no issues for 400 miles. Today it died (for the 2nd time) while doing about 30 mph. Have not been able to get it started since. Thanks. Chris

Molson, thanks for the quick response. DTC code is 12. Fuses are good. Any further suggestions are much appreciated. Chris

Molson, you are a pro! I replaced the ICM ($40)and she fired up immediately. Thank you so much for your recommendation. Saved me ~$150-200 based on estimates I had received. I really appreciate your taking the time to address my issue. Chris

Did you try to get any DTC codes from the ECM. If not here is the procedure to retrieving the DTC codes. http://www.troublecodes.net/GM/ Check the fuses, make sure there all good. hope you find a DTC code which would help us find out what is wrong with the suburban quicker. Keep me posted and good luck, be glad to help you.

Thinking that it may be a bad distributor module (ICM) and you may have to replace it. It's common on the HEI system for the Module to fail when it heats up, and when it cools down it works again. Eventually the module will fail and stop working, the ICM is under the rotor inside the distributor assembly. Check the red lead wire to the HEI for voltage reading and should be 12 Volts.

The other thing to to keep in mind, the fule pressure should be between 9PSI to 13PSI, anything different and the engine will not start.

Keep me posted, Auto Zone should have the ICM and step by step instruction to replace it.

Good luck and be glad to help.

Check the spark module under the rotor in the distributor cap they will get dry of heatsink compound and over heat this will kill the vechile for sometime then it might start up when it cools or quit all together.

How do I change spark plugs in a 1992 Chevrolet Suburban

You simply remove the old ones and make sure the new ones are gapped to the proper setting and install them.

assuming the starter is installed properly, it could be a variety of things. if the battery is not strong enough to fully start the truck. could check the condition of spark plugs and spark plug wiring.

2001 Suburban going thru coolant

The most common sources of leaks that I see on these are where the water pump bolts to the block, the weep hole on the water pump itself, and the seam at the plastic end tank of the radiator [inlet end of radiator]. You'll almost never see any coolant drip on the ground from any of these leaks because of where they are, how slow they leak, and the fact that when the engine is hot the coolant vaporizes about as fast as it can leak. I have a tool that I put on in place of the radiator cap which allows me to pressurize the cooling system to about 17 psi. If its an especially tough one to find I'll leave pressure on the system overnight and come morning the leak is usually quite evident. I'd start by looking at where the water pump bolts to the block as the gaskets there are prone to leaking the most. Good luck, hope you find your leak!

You probably have a clogged up exhaust system building backpressure on the engine. Check your mufflers and catalytic convertors if you have them something is restricting the exhaust.

01 Suburban engine, 8.1 liter, abruptly turns off

Its the crank sensor. There was a recall a few years back for 2001 8.1 liter engines crank sensor. Engine would shut off perodically and sometimes would not restart untill cool. Plus it just happened to mine. about a 350 dollar dealer fix.
