Question about 1998 Chevrolet Malibu

1 Answer

Thank you for your response earlier but it hasn't answered my problem because the car doesn't start at all after changing fuel filter and fuel pump, did the 1998 come with a key code? If so could this be my problem since the engition was changed but not to a coded key? How do I fix this if this is the problem?

This car is equipped with a pass key system. That is an anti-theft system that disables the cam and crank position sensors. This way if the computer thinks the car is being tampered with then it shuts down the spark to the engine and not allowing it to crank. Its a great thing but a pain when it doesn't work properly. Usually you can find the problem in one of three places. Bad key, Bad pass key sensor (located on back of ignition switch, and is usually the problem.), or a bad B.C.M. "body control module" These symptoms that you are experiencing are characteristics of this type of problem. This can be a tricky problem so if your not doing the work yourself then be sure that the tech that is doing the work is trustworthy and not just out to get all your money. Hope this helps you with this. Good luck.

No sorry no reset buttons. Seance the ignition has ben replaced then the key may be bad. You can take it to the dealer now because the key isn't sending the signal to the ECM. They will need to test the key and the ignition sensor.

Car cranks but doesn't start changed fuel pump, changed fuel filter, no security system. fuel injectors and pump work and have new plugs

The engine and transmission in this cars drivetrain is fully electronically controlled by a computer called the PCM (Powertrain Control Module). Whenever a problem like this occurs the computer stores a record of the problem in the form of a fault code in its memory, to read these fault codes you must have the systems memory scanned with a special tool. Once the fault code(s) are read you then must perform the appropriate diagnostic testing to find and resolve the problem(s)

Not moving fast enough in drive

Is it running alright but just no power? Try the catalytic converter, maybe it is plugged and look at the air filter maybe it is not getting enough air. If it is misfiring, change the spark plugs, spark plug wires. If it is starting alright it is probably not the fuel pump, but it wouldn't hurt to change the fuel filter if it hasn't been changed in a while.

If oil pressure sending unit is bad will it stop fuel pump from working on a 2000 blazer

You should never try a pump without it being in fuel. It uses fuel for lubrication when it is running. If the vehicle doesn't start at all when you first crank it over it is not the oil pressure sender. If you just put the pump in you might want to turn the key off and on several times to cycle the pump then try to start it. If it doesn't start then check fuel filter or check fuel pressure at fuel rail in engine compartment. Is fuel pump cycling at all when the key is turned on? There is a problem with ignition switches on some of these blazers.

Check fuel pressure, should be no less than 4 psi. The fuel transfer pump is located on frame rail under drivers door, If fuel pump is bad replace it. If that doesn't solve your problem, you may have a bad injection pump. Please rate

Hello kbyrd2409: My name is Roger and I will answer for you. If you beat on the fuel tank and it started? Then you should replace the fuel pump. Most of these pumps are made as a module unit. This means the fuel pump and sending unit are all one piece. The pump is located in the fuel tank. The fuel pressure should be 60 to 66 PSI. I would suggest replacing the fuel filter also. A dirty fuel filter will kill of a good fuel pump.
