Question about 1998 Chevrolet Malibu
This car is equipped with a pass key system. That is an anti-theft system that disables the cam and crank position sensors. This way if the computer thinks the car is being tampered with then it shuts down the spark to the engine and not allowing it to crank. Its a great thing but a pain when it doesn't work properly. Usually you can find the problem in one of three places. Bad key, Bad pass key sensor (located on back of ignition switch, and is usually the problem.), or a bad B.C.M. "body control module" These symptoms that you are experiencing are characteristics of this type of problem. This can be a tricky problem so if your not doing the work yourself then be sure that the tech that is doing the work is trustworthy and not just out to get all your money. Hope this helps you with this. Good luck.

The engine and transmission in this cars drivetrain is fully electronically controlled by a computer called the PCM (Powertrain Control Module). Whenever a problem like this occurs the computer stores a record of the problem in the form of a fault code in its memory, to read these fault codes you must have the systems memory scanned with a special tool. Once the fault code(s) are read you then must perform the appropriate diagnostic testing to find and resolve the problem(s)
