If the the abs module fails you still have breaks BUT if you need to apply the breaks to the floor the abs will not work which could allow you to go into a slide because of loss of traction. the abs system pumps the breaks to prevent your tires from locking up

What if the traction control and anti lock break system light is on

You most likely have a problem with one of the wheel speed sensors, the related wiring, or the ABS system itself. The traction control and ABS system both work together and rely on the same input information to work. A fault in the ABS system will cause both the ABS and TRAC control lights to illuminate and both systems will be disabled until the fault is gone. I would have a good service facility or dealer look at this one. One quick check you can do is to make certain that the brake fluid master cylinder is properly filled with brake fluid because if it is low enough it can also cause the systems to be disabled.

Why would my service engine light, trac off light, and anti lock break lights go on at different times when I drive?

well for one the traction and antilock lights are the same sensor. If the anitlock brake sensor goes bad and cannot count your wheel rotations then your traction control system will not work either. AS for the service engine soon light that could be part of this system also or it could be totally different you wont know until you get your code read

Traction and ABS lights are on, is this going to be an expensive repair?

Safety first, don't delay in getting a professional diagnosis at a dealer or brake shop because your brakes are not functioning normally.

A likely cause of the the traction and ABS lights coming on without an obvious reason, such as a slippery surface, is that the signal from a wheel speed sensor is not being received. One possibility is that a sensor has failed. A rough estimate for replacing a sensor without other complications is usually around $300; if it's just a loose electrical connection or sensor position, the cost will be less. Get it checked as soon as possible, because your anti-lock brakes are not working, and there may be more serious problems with the brake system. You don't want to be driving without good brakes!

Traction Active light comes on

1prettysmile,
The "traction active" light is a light that lets you know when a certain part of your Anti lock break system engages. Each tire has a sensor that detects a couple different things in the wheels. One of the sensors may be going bad and needs replaced. Any of these sensors going bad can cause those symptoms.
