Question about 1996 Buick Regal Olympic Gold

1 Answer

Ecm Have had trouble lately with what I think is the ECM. After I have driven some, if I shut the car off it will wither not start or miss so bad it can't be driven, after a cool off period(usually 3 hours) it starts and run well. We have replaced ECM with used parts with no help. Am I spotlighting on the correct part or should I look elsewere?

Do u see any security light flashing..... if so give us more details on that regard.....
could be a weak fuel pump or mostly plugged fuel filter check at the engines fuel rail for fuel pressure after you start it and it dies...if no pressure or low pressure, start with the filter, its cheaper.  but i seriously doubt the fuel pump... have it checked.....
thank you good luck

Car cranks but wont start? No spark. Changed ecm relay no help. Ignition harness is good. No fault codes. Battery is good. changed ignition relay, no help. I think its the ECM but need more info to spend...

Yes, the ECM is the last thing to replace after all other possibilities. No spark could be bad ignition coil, bad Ignition Control Module (controls the coil circuits for spark), bad plug wires, the crank and cam sensors (for ECM to determine spark timing).

Check the ICM -it can be tested at a parts store. If good, check the crank sensor.

2003 opel corsa 1.6 is engine does not start and engine control indicator light does not switch on if i turn the ignition key to start , sounds like if there is no fuel

That is not good! If engine light is not on, can has 2 problems or the bulb is gone or same problem with the ECM like no power to ECM, bad ground, ECM shut off. Easy to verify... get a multimeter; unplug ex: camshaft sensor or throttlebody plug and with the ignition on see if you they have same voltage on a wires!!?the ref. voltage is 5volts I think but if you do not see that in any wire it means the ECM is off!You also can check with a scanner if the engine unit is ok...and the problem is not so bad...maybe only a gas pump!? Good luck!

Engine shuts off when it comes to hot

Jay :
Hello and thank you for using JustAnswer.com
Jay :
do you have any codes stored? other than the swirl valve code?
Customer :
no other codes than 2 codes for swirl switch but this is only because i have the wrong ecm installed, the problem with engine shutting down is still presant witch leads me to believe we still have problem other than ecm
Jay :
you still have the original Ecm correct?
Jay :
How does the car run cold? Do you have a Scanner or a code reader?
Customer :
car was originally towed in with transmission problem , multiple misfires and bad oxygen sensor. customer wanted used transmission and all coils replaced along with the new oxygen sensor, customer picked up car, a few days later on the highway engine starte lossing power and stalled out. car restarted after sitting but only traveled a few miles before dstalling out again , we towed car in, started diagnostics and came up with ecm , yes we still have origial ecm
Customer :
we never had any DTC'S in memory with the getting hot and shutting condition , car runs perfect cold and yes we do have snap on and mac scanners
Jay :
Plug in the original Ecm and start the car. Monitor the Air and Fuel mixture readings and let me know what they are. Check these readings as the car warms up and let me know what they are.
Customer :
won't i need to have the original ecm flashed for the security system ?
Jay :
it should still be programed
Jay :
But you can use the ecm you have in the car
Customer :
the original ecm will not start car , will run test with new ecm
Jay :
k
Jay :
Also try this and let me know what happens when you try this. Get the car all warmed up until it stalls. Then unplug the MAF sensor and see if the car starts and idles.
Jay :
Let me know, thank Jay!
Customer :
with car running MAF @.42 / ign. advance HERE is a copy of it.
Jay :
I have seen when it comes to Nissans, that after market electrical parts never seem to work right
Jay :
I would go through the harness and do wiggle checks and ohm and voltage drove the wires.
Customer :
after we completed the work we have had to mil light on, even when the car was dying out
Jay :
Cause you have the Swirl valve code. That is why the MIL light is on right?
Customer :
yes now we have the light on for the swirl valve because we have a california emissions ecm in the car, i have to start with finding another ecm and have this one flashed again or do you think i should just install the original ecm and go from there
Jay :
I would go back to the original Ecm, unless you found something for sure wrong with it. Then check the harness.
Customer :
we removed all the after market coils and installed the originals , engine still shut down , we tested for injector pulse and still have pulse but no spark
Customer :
it shuts down at about the same time on each occurance, right now engine shuts down during third cooling fan cycle
Jay :
I wonder if the Ecm is bad? That is odd how on the 3rd cycle of the fans it shuts down.
Jay :
I am sorry I needed to step out for the day and will be out this evening. I will be around tomorrow if you would like to continue, if you would like I can opt out and another expert can assist you. Let me know, thanks Jay!

What are symptoms for bad ecm?

ECM, your computer very rarely go bad, if at all. either your COIL is bad or a SENSOR or two is acting up ! if your service engine soon light stays on after you start the car, you may have trouble codes stored in yor ecm. a parts store can pull them out for you, it will tell you what your problem is.

At a cold start and driven for 3 or 4 miles, the vehicle shuts down. It restarts and doesnt do it again unless its a cold start.

These are the hardest problems to solve on vvehicles. I would start by taking the vehicle to a local parts store and see if they can check the computer(ECM module). Alot of stores likee Autozone can hook up a scanner to your electronic control module. It may be the ECM module. You can get ECM's from salvage yars sometimes. Hope that will get you headed in right direction.

I have a 1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera the car starts right up then dies immediately, it has 41 lbs at the fuel rail and obvious spark. it shows no trouble codes on the scan tool but shows communication...

The ECM on this car will shut down the injector driver circuit if one of the six injectors has a coil out of tolerance. (Shorted coil or resistance out of parameters) Quick check. Unplug two wire cap to injector one at a time. (hold/push wire clip inwards then gently wiggle/lift cap off---careful with wires) With one unplugged try starting. If no start- plug back and use same procedure on next injector and so on.........In most cases if bad injector coil the engine will start when it is located. Replace injector. Some say the ECM shuts dirver circuit down to prevent further damage to switching circuit.

Wiring diagram for the ecm plugs

Im idling at the light in my 2000 Dakota R/T and all of a sudden my check engine light comes on and the engine develops a miss and starts to smoke. Diag code says misfire in #5 cyl and there is a rich raw fuel smell from exhaust. I have 175K trouble free miles and have checked compression which reveals worn but good piston rings.I replaced head gaskets and of course still exists. When I got a hand to crank while I checked voltage at each injector, #5 showed higher than the rest at all times without dropping to zero, so i'm replacing the ECM which controls signals to injectors. Oh yeah I replaced #5 injector before voltage check to no avail. Tell me if you think Im on the right track replacing ECM.

Keep blowing ECM fuse on 90 honda accord

I'm thinking the ECM is bad and grounding out, causing the car to blow the fuse. The old gas wouldn't cause this problem.

1997 ford crown victoria starting problems

Sounds like you're on the right track. A bad TPS and ISC motor sensor will cause the problems you're experiencing. Your ECM relies on the readings it gets from the TPS to be sure there is enough air getting to the engine. If the ECM gets a bad reading and thinks not enough air is getting to the engine, it will cut the fuel supply, hence causing your engine to die. Your ISC relies on the reading from the TPS as well. It detects from the ECM if the throttle plate is closed or not. If it thinks the throttle plate is fully closed, it will start allowing air to enter the engine and bypass the throttle plate. If your ECM starts seeing some unmeasured air coming from ISC and detects the throttle plate is open (which it may not be due to a bad TPS reading), the ECM will again cut the fuel supply to avoid the risk of detonation.

So, replace your TPS first and see if that cures your problem. Also, check the resistence readings of your ISC to be sure that is within spec. If your problem still occurs, check your Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor in your air filter housing. Be sure your spark plugs, plug wires, and distributor are all in good shape as well. Replace your fuel filter if you haven't done so in the past 2-3 years.
Good luck!
