Question about 1998 Chevrolet Malibu

1 Answer

Fuel pump and filter have been replaced. The fuel doesn't get to the engine. I believe that the anti-theft is shutting down the fuel to the engine. I have someone check the car with a computer diagonstic system and nothing comes up. I bought the car from someone else and when I first got it it ran fine, they changed the igition switch but it was running after that. My nephews went joyriding in my car and I think they ran it out of gas so that's why I changed the fuel pump and filters, my injectors have been checked too and they are fine, What can the problem be and how can I fix it without taking it to the dealer. I can't afford to put out alot of money to get it fixed since I already have... The person working on it moved before he could figure out what it could be, he said probably the ohms on the igition was the problem that it needed to be reset.

When U turn the key to the on position (dont start it - but U can't so nvrmnd) and listen to underneath the car about at the drivers door. You should hear a buzzing noise that is the fuel pump operating.

If no noise, check the relay for the fuel pump. Located on the diagram for the fuse box located under the hood of the car.

use the wiper relay (if the wiper work) to test the fuel pump. If the car starts leave the wiper relay installed in teh fuel pump slot and drive to get U a new wiper relay.

If the fuel pump still don't kick on then its either wiring or a bad fuel pump. U can check for voltage at the tank before U buy a new pump. Abt $280 new.

Hope that helps.

If the relay swap dont

believe it or not, I have heard the instrument cluster to cause problems like this in similar vehicles. Obviously the anti-theft system is actuated. I don't know where the anti-theft module is for sure, but I did have an achieva which changing the cluster solved this same problem.

2002 silverado 5.3. Was running rough all of a sudden then not at all. Fuel pump ok. Fuel filter replace. Got a full tank of gas the day before it happened. Had to tow from the freeway.

This could possibly be the anti theft system shutting down your injectors. This is common on GM vehicles. Turn your key forward 2 clicks in the ignition, if a light comes on that says SECURITY, then you no that it is the anti theft immobilizer shutting you down.

This link has info and some solutions to this problem. DO IT YOURSELF fixes too.

2000 Jeep Grand cherokee Laredo wont start. Engine turn over . No noise from fuel pump with ignition on. Replaced fuel pump and filter.Turn ignition on- pump did not run.Jumped the fuel pump at the pump...

sounds alot the the pcm it controls the fuel pump and ign system but the anti theft would keep it from starting because the key has a transponder in it programmed for that vehicle and that would kill all ign if triggered

No check engine light,no spark,no fuel pump,no auto shut down relay working.Vechile cranks over but don't start.

Either your anti-theft unit is on, or your computer is faulty.

If anti-theft is on, leave key in ON position for exactly 10 minutes, then start car.

Anti theft system. You might have a door lock causing the anti theft system to kick in. (thinking its being stolen.)
