Its your speedometer condensation builds up on the steel spindel and rust starts to form if you can get to it use a littel anti-rust lube [ not WD_40 ] and this should stop the jumping.

Speed odometer

LSI 4cylinder or 3cylinder? engine. , all answer USA cars.
all answers now, are 3cylinder

did the odometer quiet too?
key fact
and in USA< connect any scan tool and see if VSS died.

the usa 96, 1.0L 3cyl has the VSS sensor in the speedo
and when the cable snaps, Speedo to transaxle flex drive cable.
snamps
the speed goes dead
the odometer goes dead
and Vss goes dead.
easy huh, if all 3 are dead.
but if speedo ONLY goes dead, that means ITS dead.
vss= veh.speed sensor. or MPH sensor.

Engine check light is on and odometer stop running

Vehicle speed sensor. This runs the odometer/speedometer. Top of tranny, a cable runs all the way to the back of the odometer.

This is the output speed sensor defect. Go on the Web browser and enter F 150 output speed sensor first, for a range of photos for both 2 wheel and 4 wheel drive trucks. Then search for your exact Year model.

As you will see, some have an input and output sensor, the 4x4 may have the sensor on the Transfer case, and others are on the tailshaft housing.

I hope my solution is helpfuel. Please rate my response.

F150 Speedometer issue

This is your speed sensor. Now i do not know if this is going to be cable driven or electrical because they used both in 95. Your local auto parts store will tell you exactly what kind is in your truck. I just changed one friday on a 94 ford escort and it was electrical. The part was around 20 dollars for the speed sensor.

My speedometer and odometer on my 98 ford explorer

the speedometer/odometer works on a cable that goes into the side of the transmission with one 10mm bolt holding it in. It sounds as if the cable has been broken, pulled loose, or siezed up. Its easy to check the end under the vehicle but its very complicated checking it inside the dashboard. If you are a do it yourself type of person, id look underneath and see if the connection under the vehicle is still connected. Look on left rear of the transmission for a cable that goes into it and is held with a "Y" bracket and a small bolt. The dashboard part is the type of job where u got to make sure you remember where each screw goes to get back together.

Not shifting into drive

Look into the speedometer issue. The pcm won't shift the transmission right without the speed input. Check the vehicle speed sensor. Is it 2 or 4 wheel drive?

95 Ford Explorer Odometer

Check the speed sensor in the transmission.
Being a 95 it might still be cable driven. Disconnect the cable from the transmission and hook a drill to it. Spin it and see if it registers. If it does, the gear going into the tranny is broken, if it doesn't the cable is probably broken.
