Not really DIY ,because it has to be re-tracked easier with a four poster hoist than laying under car with a two axle stands and grovelling

Replace front pinion

Are you referring to the rack and pinion steering assembly? If so, repairing or rebuilding this unit requires very specialized tools. Even auto repair shops do not fix these. We simply remove the defective unit and replace it with another good complete unit.
If you are asking how to replace this unit, that also requires special tools to remove the tie rods. You must also be very careful and know what you are doing or you can ruin the clock spring for the driver's side airbag. The shaft for the steering column is "phased" to the shaft on the pinion gear. You must be sure to keep the steering column and the new rack & pinion assembly in phase or you can do more damage to your truck. You will also need to take the truck to a shop for a front end alignment after you are done. If you think that you have the skills to handle this job, I would suggest you watch the videos I've linked. FYI, it will take a skilled mechanic with all the proper tools over 4 hours to do this job.

Hi! got a humming sound when I turn the steering wheel either side. have checked and noted there is a fluid leak at the left rack and pinion area. the fluid is still in the acceptable limit. what do i need...

You can either have your Rack and Pinion rebuilt, or you can replace it with a new or remanufactured one. Anyhow, it needs to be replaced or you will continue to lose fluid, and the problem will get worse.

Rack and pinion replacement, DIY or not?

Depends. Can't tell without seeing it. Try going to my favorite advisor who will help for free and tell you how much it will most likely cost you... Autozone. There is usually an experienced mechanic working there for just this reason. They may even recommend a good and reasonable repair shop locally who they personally trust. Follow their advice.

Steers hard to the left normal to the right

Hello vdc442: My name is Roger and I will answer your question. The steering rack is most likely your problem. The rack has seals inside of it. They start to leak internally and this causes the hard steer to one side. To repair the rack and pinion takes special equipment. The easiest way to repair is to replace the rack. This also takes special equipment in that the car will need realignment when done. Also this is a messy job.The changing of the rack can be difficult. But if you are mechanically inclined you should be able to do this. Make sure to chalk the tires and be sure to use Jack stands to support the car while working under the car.
Should you need further help please just ask. Please rate the quality of the answer you received. THis way we know your answer helped. Thank You for using Fix Ya. Roger

I have a minor broken seal on my rack and pinion

There is but it's not going to help, the rack and pinion steering has large amount of pressure on it when you turn the steering wheel. If the seal is bad, sooner not later. The seal will fail and you lose all the power steering fluid and the power steering which can in turn also damage the rack and pinion. The safest and cheapest thing to do is get it repaired before it get's worst and you end up replacing the rack and pinion too. Good luck and keep me posted. be glad to help
