I just bought a 97 jetta for this guy and the only thing is wrong is the linkage. the linkage feels like it is spring loaded to the passanger side of the car and cant get all the gears. the reasion for this is cuz the guys son took the shifter linkage apart and i think he put it together wrong. if u know how i would be able to fix this please let me know. email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. thank you
Check a good VW service manual, there is a special alignment gauge for the shifer assembly that is required to set up the shifter if it is dissasembled.
the tool is very reasonably priced, and can be found at several companies that sell specilized auto repair tools.
My guess the last owner probalby got a "short shift kit" and shifter rebuild kit from one of the places that sell VW performance parts & messed up the installation. these kits work very well , if you put them in right!
a 6ya Mechanic can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repair professionals here in the US. click here to Talk to a Mechanic (only for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need. Goodluck!

sounds like the linkage came apart on the inside of the door. Remove the inner door panel & u will see the linkage probably disconnected. find out where its disconnected & reconnect it. there may be a clip which holds it together which u may find in the bottom of the door.
To replace the struts, remove the strut/spring as an assembly from the car. You'll need a strut spring compressor to remove the spring. Take your time and compress the spring slowly and evenly. You'll be able to remove the strut after the spring is compressed far enough. Installation is reverse of removal.
pop off the distributer cap and dry it out well. Put it back on and it should work. This happened to my 97 jetta too...also if I go through large puddles at a quick speed this may happen too. There isn't good electrical contact with the moisture.
The best thing to do is log on to Auto Zone and register, It's free and you should get the information your looking for. Keep me posted, be glad to help and if your having problems getting that information just let me know and i'll send if needed. Good luck and hope this helps. Oh and Auto zone also has loner tools for you to get the job done if you don't have a spring compressor for the struts.
sounds like there is something in the wrong place in the horn button. it makes contact when you turn left just as if you had pushed the horn button. i wonder does your airbag light ever come on, i mean not just in the startup sequence, that's normal. probably you need to take the horn button part of the steering wheel apart and get things back in the right place or maybe replace some parts, but because of the airbag being right there too it's not something i would recommend that you do yourself. accidentally setting off an airbag is not a good thing.
If you not good with a wrench don't try to remove it. I am not sure but you can try two different things one lock and unlock the driver side door about 3 time then put the key in the ignition and try to start it, someone else said to remove one of the battery cables wait about twenty min. or so and replace it and try. If you do have to have the guy fix make sure he takes it out and gives it to you.
look inside engine compartment, locate the transmission has metal linkage arms with plastic round end connection in to metal half ball mechanism , play with system, move it back and forward, side to side, they are behind transmission and left side of car standing on front, by playing You will notice free play in one, that's the bad one, look in to getting all new
