Question about 2003 Mitsubishi Galant

1 Answer

I just had my battery replaced and now the car starts fine but won't stay running. It wants to idle at 400rpm which is way to low. Before the battery change it was idling at 6-800rpm. How do I fix? (The technician at Sears said it would "re-learn" after running for a few minutes. But after 10 minutes, still not running right.)

I would recommend going to your local auto parts store first. Ask them if your replacement battery has the correct cranking amps for you vehicle application. Also have them do a free diagnostic check on your charging system. This will test your battery, alternator and starter. This can be done without removal of any parts. Please vote for this if you have found this information helpful, thanks.

2004 Ram 2500 starts, low idle 400 rpm and stalls, any ideas?

With out see it running on a scanner. Maybe the IAC or throttle body. Does it have any codes. Did you erase codes after rebuild? Any time I do a rebuild on engines and transmission, the codes have to to erased. Other wise you are trying to run a new part on old PCM codes. Codes have to be erased.

My 2005 Ford Focus won't stay running unless my foot is on the gas. It starts just fine & the check engine light is NOT on. What could be causing this?

It is likely that the engine management system has lost its base line calibration. If the battery is weak and during the crank to start the voltage dipped low enough the Engine Control Module lost its calibration. If the pedal is depressed during the crank the TPS (Throttle position sensor) will lose the idle position for the throttle. The hunting and surging and resultant stalling is the ECM seeking out the limits and re-establishing the throttle idle plate location.

If battery is OK than running the car allowing the calibration of the vehicle to reestablish itself will correct the problem. My experience is that this happens if the gas pedal is depressed during crank with a very very low battery voltage. Always the best way is to not touch the pedal during any cranking starting procedure. Or after a battery replacement.

To accelerate the calibration process attempt to run the car ingear tring not to allow the car to stall. After afew munites the car will have reestablished its normal running calibration and you will be allset.

Battery light on Suzuki xl-7 when driving this car

that means the charging system is failing
can be many things.
battery bad, lugs rusty (clean them first)
alternator bad.
wiring on both bad.
loose alternator belt or it fell off?
engine idle speed way too low, like 400rpm and shaking engine?
it will take some testing to find out cause, using thing called voltmeter.
get it serviced? ask a mech to check the cause , and do the tests?
dont drive it or get stranded...

My Range Rover 2.7 diesel starts but then chugs on a very low idle, no throttle response and black smoke, what could be wrong?

i'd suggest getting the cylinder compressions checked , black smoke indicates burning oil so could be piston rings , also that would explain lack of throttle response and low revs

99 vw passat. recently had to start unplugging my battery due to a relay going out. lost my primary headlights, wipers, turn signals, air flow and now my power stays on, hence why i unplug the battery. yet...

Sounds like a combination of problems. First your battery is dead, and your alternator isn't putting out enough to run car. As for relay, replace it. I had a coil pack go out on me after I had other electrical issues so that's possible too. Go to VWvortex.Com and search the forums

Idles too low, won't keep running. Idles about 400RPM and will stay there if you feather down the throttle. Can't seem to find Vacuum leak. Sounds like slight air sucking sound toward back of firewall but...

You need to replace your idle air control valve. It is located on the throttle body with 2 screws holding it in. Should take about 15 minutes to replace and doesn't cost too much either. That will get you taken care of. Good luck. Thanks for rating my response and for using FixYa!

Car is running poorly

I'm a former nissan tech, just let them look at it a bit more. It's frustrating but let it go. I'm sure they're checking the t.p.s.,mass air flow sensor, idle air control, etc. You could suggest checking the negative battery cable for corrosion. That will also cause your problems.

My 88 dakota will not stay on!

it sounds like the new idle you put in is set too low so the truck is getting barely enough gas to start and keep running try turning up the air fuel mixture and it should be better hope this helped
