Question about 1998 Chevrolet S-10 Pickup

My s-10 will all of a sudden die after driving down the road for a while. After a few minutes it will start again

    I changed the fuel filter already. The computer said that the oxygen sensor was bad, but I didn't think that would make it stop running

Your fuel pump may be going bad. If the fuel filter is dirty, it will restrict the flow of gas and heat up the fuel pump causing it stop working till it cools down. Change the fuel filter first and see if the fixes the problem, also have Auto Zone check for any DTC codes just in case if it's something else other then a bad filter or fuel pump.     Try this, the fuel pump relay is in the glove box. You'll see a panel in the back left side that say relay in the glove box, there are three relay's in there. one is for the brake light, A/C compressor and the fuel pump which is the middle one. Switch them around and see if that fixes the problem. The relay may be going bad and when it heats up, the voltage may drop to the fuel pump.

    The other thing to is have the fuel pressure checked at the shredder valve. I think there should be 65PSI but double check that, and there is also a bad history on the type of fuel injector system on the 4.3 vortec with the spider poppet valve.

    The o2 sensor would not shut the fuel pump down, what would shut the fuel pump down is low votage in the system and the ECM drop's below 10.5 volts will shut the fuel pump, low oil pressure will shut the fuel pump also.

    I've only seen this once, the wire harness from the frame rail to the sending unit went bad due to heat through the wire and corrosion. As the electricity went through, the wire would heat up and then the voltage would drop at the connection due to corrosion. Buy this is just a long shot.

    Good luck and keep me posted, If you like try this. Put the ignition to the fun position and pull the fuse to the ECM (BATT) from the fuse box on the side of the dash drivers side for 30 sec. Place the fuse back in and wait 10 seconds, than start the S10. IT MAY STALL BUT LET IT, DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING. Just restart it and let idle for 1 min then take it for a test drive. The ECM is relearning the engine and transmission like the day it cam off the assembly line.

    All the DTC code and history has been cleared and any setting the ECM may have done to compensate for any problems in the past that was never cleared by a scanner.

    Keep me posted and when ever you get to Auto Zone have them cane the S10 for any new codes. Keep me posted. Let me know if you need to improve a few things and i may be able to tell you if it works or not.

There are many things that can contribute to this problem. It sounds like it may be ignition related. Possibly an ignition control module or ignition coil. The check engine light coming on while driving is the key to finding the problem. The light comes on when the computer finds a problem and will then store it in its memory. Have the codes checked for what the computer has found to be at fault and with a little diagnostics, should lead you to the problem

Why does my 93 Honda Accord run fine and then dies going down the road and will start again and die again?


There is a black fuel relay way up under the top left driver side dash that breaks its main wire solder connections on the circuit board under over-heat conditions. Resolder that relay. Starting fluid will show that you have lost fuel delivery under no start conditions. You can use the breather hose from the valve cover for this test.

If the engine overheated then the antifreeze may be getting into the engine, indicating a cracked head or block. check for water in oil via dipstick. .

Sounds like you need a fuel pump. There is an access panel in the floor of the car to get to the pump.

My 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Will die going down the road. Sometimes it starts back up without me touching the key.other times I have to wait a few minutes before it will crank again.Any suggestions? Thank...


I've got to be reading this incorrectly...You are driving, the engine turns off...you pull off the road? And then without touching the key the engine re-starts, but you haven't touched the key? Or, sometimes you need to sit there for a few minutes and then turn the key to start it?

Engine dying on me


clean the MAF sensor first, then replace the pump. Could also be the cam sensor going in the distributor. Check under cap and rotor for brown dust. If present replace the distributor.
