Question about 1996 Chevrolet Astro

1 Answer

This is the 3rd tranny - Exact same thing is happening.

'97 GMC 1500 4x4 350 with a 4L60E. This is the third tranny in 5 months. OD goes out first, then all the gears start slipping. The 3rd tranny just went out the other night. The first tranny was in January, and it was the original tranny. These last two were junk yard tranny's. The junk yard tranny's all have a 90 day warranty, so I keep returning them. Each come with their own torque converter. I would really appreciate ANY help!!!

You might try to add a transmission cooler. If its getting hot it will eat the transmission easily. time to swap it out and sell the problem to someone else.

1996 gmc suburban transmission shift problem

96 gm trucks had a proble with third gear burning out because of a ground issue from pcm..there was a bulletin for adding a new ground for third gear control circuit...aftermarket trans shops do not remember this problem and it is often overlooked..take to local dealership and you should be able to get problem resolved

Transmission shifting problem

You need to get a hold of your local Chevy dealer. There was a bullitin on slide shifting on these years. There is a wire that has to be jumped on the computer to solve this problem. Hopefully it hasn't already ruined the transmission

Goes into neutral and then shifts hard into 1st on slowdown

It sounds like your input clutch seals are rolling. Is the check engine light on. It could also be the pressure control solenoid could be causing the problem aswell

When it shifts to third does it just feel like neutral? If yes it will need rebuilt again, you hurt the 3/4 clutch.

Slow shifting when engine is cold

I have the same problem with my 97.... especially shifting from 3rd to O/D... I've had the tranny serviced and flushed.... It still does it until the tranny warms up.... the tranny's in them are temperature picky!!!!! It's the nature of the beast!!! Wait until spring and everything will be good until next winter!!! If you're really concerned with it you can put a "cold front" on it or block half (NO MORE THAN HALF) of the tranny cooler with cardboard thru the winter months

1995 GMC Transmision slipping

hey john. ya..funny chev trannys. try idling it , selecting every gear, pausing for 2 seconds at each selection. make note of where the fluid is going? make note if it is happening while hot or cold.
Also change the fluid and screen or filter. they do make some metal and that could also be a cause. good luck!
