1990 honda civic with low kms @70,000 is overheating

Car is overheating.....steaming and sputtering ...have added water to the radiator, going to put some antifreeze in as well. How can you tell if it's the fan or the thermostat, or something else that is causing the overheating? I'm afraid to drive it anywhere.....

1990 Honda Civic low kms. overheated, added water, got it home, tried to start it, water sprayed out of the overflow. put in a new thermostat and added new anti freeze. Car won't start now....sounds like it is going to, but doesn't, and there is a strange clicking noise coming from under the steering wheel near the door panel/trunk release...can't seem to see what is making the noise. Any ideas?

Hear a clicking inside under the dash.

Also- the fan will blow fast with the AC on and then blow slow without adjusting the switch

The headlights follow the same trend - bright and not so bright which coropsonds to th air conditioner fan speed low & high for no aparent reason.

Try the antifreeze and if it does not work still it could be the radiator needs fixing.

Overheating when I sit idle.

Over heating the engine is a serious concern. With the hood raised you should hear the motorized fan turn on just behind the radiator as the engine requires additional cooling.. If you look in from the rear of the radiator you should see the fan blades.

This electric powered motor operates on a thermostat and when the engine temperature rises this fan should come on. I'm assuming from your description that when driving and air is flowing through the radiator as the car travels the engine is nor overheating.

Check fan motor thermostat, check fan motor and check wiring.

Ususally when the heater blows hot air only when the car is at hight RPM is because low coolant in the system. It sounds like a bad thermostat . In the worst case you need to do a diagnostic check to the head gasket. Because the first thing to get blowen out when the car over heat are the head gasket.

The temperature of my 1993 honda civic it''s going up when i am driving it what could the problem be

Typical issue with the 92'-95' Civic. Thermostat is one possibility, yes. Another is that it overheated due to the thermostat or the fact that they have a very small radiator which tends to corrode and become increasingly less efficient, in time causing it to everheat and eventually cracking lengthwise away from the radiator cap along the (plastic) top of the radiator due to steam pressure on the inside of the rad. Inspect the fins on the radiator to ensure they are not turning green and corroding away, this will make a marked difference in your colling capability.

1990 Honda Civic low kms. overheated, added

I want you to take a couple of spark plugs out and examine them. If you find Anti-freeze on them then you may have a blown headgasket. A very common problem of driving a car until it overheats. I really do hope im wrong. Since it is an overhead valve engine with the cam shaft above...its a 1000.00 to 1500.00 dollar job to have it properly repaired. From here out im just going to explain why this happens...
When a car overheats - be it a faulty thermostat...low coolant...or a faulty water pump or improper coolant mixture ratio. The engine gets so hot that it actually makes the top of the engine change shape... it actually changes enough to damage the head gasket. The head gasket keeps the explosion inside the combustion chamber. Keeps the water in its coolant jacket. and keeps the oil inside its ports. When the Headgasket fails. Sometimes coolant gets into the oil (makes a milky residue form on the inside of the oil filler cap...or makes the engine oil look like chocolate milk.) or oil gets into the coolant (makes your coolant have an oil slick on top) It can also cause water to get into the combustion chamber and when the engine is running - blast the combustion back into the coolant (causes the coolant overflow to overflow or spray) or oil gets into the combustion chamber causing the plugs to get fouled (dirty). worse case...all the above happens. I hope this helps in figuring this problem out...i really do hope im wrong about a blown headgasket . As even i tremble in fear of it happening to my car. Good Luck!

Your oil pump, located in the oil pan, is not working. This is VERY serious and you should not run the engine until it is fixed.

try bleeding the air out of the cooling system right after you start the motor up. this will allow you to get all the air out but not steam. do this until the coolent comes out. common cause, it could be vapor locking and not letting the coolent flow causing OVERHEATING. hope this helps
