Question about 1998 Ford Escort

Broke down on side of road

My son is in Boone, NC and is broken down on the side of the road. He says his battery light is on, he has no power steering (kind of important in the mountains), and when he pulled over about an hour ago his engine was overheating. It isn't overheating now, but still no power steering and the battery light is on. I am in Goldsboro NC so I can't get to him to help him in a timely manner. He is in a 1998 Ford Escort ZX2. What do I need to tell him to do?

Thanks. It turned out that the water pump had a bad ball bearing (which accounted for the overheating). It caused the pump to seize up and made the serpentine belt come off(which accounted for the lack of power and thus lack of power steering).

If the battery light is on then the battery charging system is inop, that means a problem with the Alternator or the wiring to the Alternator.

2008 pt cruiser - check engine light came on, within minutes it started to "power down" and and died. Won't start. What could cause this? BTW have changed spark plugs, camshaft sensore, cranks

My PT did that when my timing belt broke. It cost $500.00 to replace it. If it is broken, be ready to have some motor work done. I had to have to values replaced at a cost of $900.00. If your timing belt is not broken then check the alternator and battery. I was riding down the road and my PT shut all the way down and would not start. I had to leave it beside the road. It was my alternator. It gave me no warning.

My 17-year old son asserts that his '99 Sunbird (112K miles) broke down several days ago causing him to pull off the road - no additional details - after which he restarted the car and drove home. Next...

If the timing belt (chain ) broke or jumped the car would not have restarted after your son shut the engine off. (The motor would have stopped on it's own.) Timing belts are an issue with most modern cars and if the motor is what is referred to as an interference engine there will be valve damage. The other possibility is that some components from the butterfly valves in intake manifold were sucked into the cylinder head causing damage to the cylinders , pistons and valves. No matter what the cause its going to cost a lot to repair.

Battery light came on,no power steering.Tried to drive home,ABS light came on,wipers were slow also.Pulled in,car wouldn't start again.

It is most likely your alternator. Your alternator failed and then your battery lost its charge. Have the battery charged and tested before you replace anything just to double check. Either way, the battery needs to be charged seperately. Don't try to charge it with your new alternator or jumper cables as this could burn up your new alternator.

What is wrong when the brake and battery light is on

check your belts. make sure the alternator belt is on and is in good condition. the alternator belt might be broken and you might be running on just battery power. which would cause the battery light to turn on... just a thought
