Need to know engine and transmission type --- but unless you do it yourself it will cost more than the car value. look for a local guy working out of his garage or have a gearhead friend help you--------it really isn't that big of a job, but you will need tools, jackstands, etc and allow yourself 3 days at a comfortable pace so do a decent job and the necessary back and forth trips to the parts or tool store. approx 1200.00 usually covers it to have it done by shop with rebuilt or rebuilding yours.

Have you checked the linkage at the transmission itself as that could be where the problem is.

TYPE OF TRANSMISSION FLUID NEEDED FOR 97 CHEVY CAVALIER AND HOW MUCH

You can use Dexron II or Dexron III, but you can also use the improved Dexron VI which replaces both the afore mentioned fluids. Use Dexron VI as it is an improvment. Caution: Do not overfill. Check fluid level according to the instructions in your owner's manual and make sure the car is parked on a level surface or you will get a false reading.
