Gas gauge not working right for 2000 silverado

How do i fix my 2000 silverado gas gauge so it will register correctly? When I fill the tank the gauge goes to empty then slowly works it self to full. After I burn some fuel off it works properly when I crank it up.

The gauge tells how much gas is in the car when you turn it on then goes down to empty and stays there.

The only thing that will cause this symptom is the fuel tank sending unit.

Fill up gas tank gauge goes to full as I use gas the gauge goes down to 1/4 tank but no lower I have ran out of gas because i thought i Had A 1/4 tank of gas this is on a 2005 silverado

Sounds like the float in the tank is faulty, or the gauge on the dash.
You should be able to unplug the circuit to the sending unit and check both components.

When I fill up my gas tank the gauge registers at 5/8th of a tank. Occassionallt the gauge will register a full tank but while I'm driving it will go back to 5/8th.

Your fuel sending unit is probably a little sticky...
I wouldnt worry about it... It's the bottom half of the tank of gas that matters , right?

Gas gauge does't work properly

this almost always stems from a faulty fuel level sensor in the fuel tank. It's a part of the fuel pump, so you have to replace the whole thing at once in order to fix it. If you have around 100,000 miles on it, you're getting due for a pump anyways, so you may keep this in mind. Symptoms for the fuel sender, will be intermittent readings on the gas gauge, when it reads, it's correct, but when it doesn't, you get a low fuel message and the gauge goes to empty. This may have a tendency to do it when the fuel tank is within a certain level; but not at a fuller or lesser mark.

Gas gauge shows empty after filling gas tank. Eventually the gas gauge will register the proper level.

The gauge circuit is shunted on most cars, this is wierd, but needed to stabilize the readings... Your description sounds like normal function. Drivers would complain if the qauge were to be instant, going around corners, starting, stopping, all move fuel, and the gauge would indicate this, cauing driver alarm...Been this way for ever, although yours sounds like it is on the far side of the scale...if it reads correctly after a while, you could replace everything and you would have the same performance.

there is a sending unit in the tank this has probably clogged or wore out it has a filter on it, with gas debries this will make your guages stop working correctly

replace sending unit by dropping tank with gas out of tank and then pull out sending unit replace with new one
