There is a note in my timing gears/ chains book that states "cam shafts can be turned without the valves contacting pistons when the crankshaft set at 90 degrees ATDC no 1 cylinder" ===So that means that yes --it is an interference fit engine and there can be expected valve damage

Testimonial: "The position of the valves was set in the correct position (IE) align the cam shaft gears. At this point the piston was rotated to tdc.Air pressure was pushed into the cylinder and we do not have any leaks. So we will finsh the the install and complete the repairs. The valves did not impact the piston. SOURCE: my saturn needs a new timing belt. does it have

I believe by 2000 interference motors are no longer, but anytime you drop a timing belt when the engine is running at 2,500 RPM's that is hard on the valve train.
I would replace the belt and try it out.
Let me know if you need the procedure, and how it goes.

2.5l. Why is there no compression on rear cylinder head?

There is two types of engine when considering the matter of timing belts and chains...
Non-interference engines.
Interference engines.

Most petrol engines built in the last four decades are interference types and all diesel engines ditto.

An interference engine is where the pistons and valves share the same space making it very important that everything happens at exactly the right time - when the timing belt or chain breaks on an interference engine the best outcome is usually a couple of slightly bent valves because piston to valve contact is inevitable.
With some engines a broken belt or chain is a complete disaster, totally writing off an engine...

The periodic replacement of the timing belt is very important.

My 2015 nissan np200 1.6 8valve broke cambelt will my valves also be bent

If the timing belt snaps, they run into each other, causing bent valves (most common), cylinder head or camshaft damage, and possibly piston and cylinder wall damage. ... In a non-interference engine, the pistons and valves don't occupy the same space, so if the timing belt snaps, no valve or cylinder damage occurs.
nissan are all Interference engines

2001 pontiac grand am 2.4 car died no noise when i went to restart it sounded as if the chain broke the motor turned over freely would a bad chain that jumped time sound like this

Yes a broken chain could sound like and cause a 'no start' condition.

Unfortunately I believe this is what's called an 'interference' engine. In other words, if the chain slips or breaks it COULD cause the tops of the pistons to come into contact with the valves. Bending the valves and possibly causing piston or cylinder head damage.

Also if I'm not mistaken the water pump is also run off of the same chain. So IF you find the chain broke or slipped it may or may not have caused serious damage to other engine components. The water pump isn't a big deal but the valves, pistons, or cylinder head could add up real quick expense wise.

Being attempted starting has already occurred (which is understandable as that's the first reaction when a vehicle stalls) any damage that may have happened is already done. Now it's a matter of diagnosing to see how bad it is.

When attempting to start the engine it will turn over with a rather non-rhythmic sound if the chain broke or jumped time.

Sorry for the 'gloom and doom'. Simply trying to give a straightforward answer.

My timing chain has snapped

I assume it's your timing belt, not a chain, which rarely, if ever snap. Depending on the make of the car and the engine you may, or may not, have serious engine damage.. DO NOT ATTEMPT to start the car, have it towed to your shop of choice. If there is no engine damage a timing belt replacement generally will run you 2 or 3 hundred bucks...if you did serious engine damage you may have to decide if the car if worth the money to have it repaired. What you need to know is whether your car has an "interference" or "non-interference" type engine.. In an interference type engine if the timing belt breaks the valves will "interfere" with the pistons as they travel up if the timing belt breaks, which results in generally catastrophic engine failure.. non-interference engines generally suffer little or no engine damage with a broken timing belt.. I broke a timing belt on my 1990 Toyota Supra going 70mph, but it was a non-interference engine and after having the belt replaced it was fine.. here is a good list someone put together on what type of engine is in your car.. you should find the engine type either marked on the engine or on a label under the hood, or the owners manual.. good luck. http://yourcarangel.com/2014/07/interference-engines-complete-list/

I have a 96 dodge caravan with a 2.4 motor is this non interference or interference?

There are very few engines that are non interference ( from my data books regarding timing belts and chains) that you will have an interference engine. It relates to the fact that the valves will interfere (hit) with the pistons in the event of belt/chain failure

Blew the timing belt, is it fixable? would it have hurt the valves?

The 1.6 liter and 1.8 liter - 4 cylinder engines in a 1994 Toyota Corolla are :

non - interference engines ( according to the Gates website , they make timing belts

etc. )

Read more: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Interference_or_non-interference_1994_toyota_corolla#ixzz18sCsYgeh

Non -Interference means your valves would not have hit the pistons so no damage should have been done to your engine.

Bronken Timing belt. Could this have damaged other things in car

If you 2000 Dodge Stratus is equipped with either the 2.0 Liter (SOHC) 4 cylinder engine or the 2.5 Liter (SOHC) V6 then you have serious engine damage. Both these engines are interference engines. When the belt breaks the pistons will make contact with the valves thus causing damage. The belt on the 4 cylinder should have been replaced at 100,000 miles. The belt on the V6 should have been replaced at 60,00 miles. At 60 mph you for sure are going to have some damage. How much damage, you will know when they open it up.
