How do I get the softop lid open?

The softop compartment lid will not open. I suspect there is something wrong with the cable that releases the latch or the latch itself. How do I get the lid to open to fix the latch/cable?

Sorry...I don't think it has anything to do with strings on the soft top. The soft top opens and locks into place perfectly. The problem is the compartment lid. This is the compartment that is used to store the soft top when it is folded up and secured behind the passenger seat.

The last time I open the lid, unfolded and locked down the soft top, and then closed the lid to the storage compartment. The hard lid closed and locked correctly. Now when I use the lever to release the compartment lid and open it up, nothing happens. The lid is locked closed so that I can not put my soft top down into the storage compartment. It seems like the lever which I think is connected to a cable which I think is connected to a latch is not working correctly.

  • dnbday Jun 05, 2009

This seems like it would work if I had an automatic open/closing soft top, but I don't. My 1998 323i is completely manual. When it works, I pull the release lever on the drivers side near passenger left arm rest and the compartment hard lid unlatches. I then manually left open the lid and manually pull out the soft top unfolding it and locking it into position with the handle in the center of the windshield.

Again, when I pull the release lever to open the compartment lid, it is not released. The latch and or cable the releases the lid may be the problem. How do I get it open to fix the latch and or cable?

  • dnbday Jun 05, 2009

Once again...I have no motors that automatically open and close the soft top. I have no red handle. I have no convertable switch. I have no #7 fuse. The open and close of my soft top is all manual. The problem I have is not with my soft top, but rather with the hard lid that covers the soft top storage area behind the passengers seat. It will not open. There is only one lever that opens the lid and it is in the back seat behind the driver near the back seat passengers left arm rest.

To find out if its the cabel you can take the latch there will be a cable conected un do the latch there should be 2 bolts and with a pair of pliers pull on the cable if the cable comes all the way out you know it is the cable. now there shoud be carpit or you are going to have to take the pannel off it should be held on with pop screws after that you can get to the latch

First of all what is your soft top issue you refer too. Pulling the emergency red handle is to allow you to close the top not open it. Now you will need to re-sync the entire top starting with disengaging the motors in the left rear side of the trunk. You will need to remove the cover to see the motors and gears. Pulling the red handle should have disengaged both motor drives and unlocked the boot. Since you did the opposite I would suggest closing the soft top and once closed (do you have a fully auto top which does not have the handle in the middle of the top that attaches to the windshield?) then reconnect the motors assuming you can get into the trunk to do so. The actuating rods can be moved slightly to get the teeth to align if need be. See if you can open the top normally.
If this fails to work and by the way the top does a re-sync every 8th opening and closing, then you will need to get the top into the boot which means if the motors don't engage you will need to pull the red handle and get the boot up, motors must be disengaged, fuse #7 must be pulled to over ride the locking of the trunk so you can get to the motors to reengage them, close the trunk and reinstall fuse #7. Boot must be down and hopefully locked or at least the micro-switch on the passenger side making correct contact. Ignition switch off, press and hold the convertible top switch to the down (open) position, turn the ignition switch to the open position and wait 10 secs with switch still in the same position. This should completely close and lock the boot down. Release the switch after one more second and hopefully the top will open normally.
Pulling the emergency red handle without knowing what and why you are doing this will be an expensive mistake.
For what it is worth the convertible top is fully diagnostic on MoDic machines that BMW and really good independents have.

There are two motors in the trunk. One is on the drivers side and the other is also on the drivers side , but up under the top of the trunk. I believe that if you re-engage these two motors, you have to press the top opening button for about 12 seconds, until you hear the motors turn and then stop. Otherwise you will need to resych the entire top starting with disengaging the motors in the left rear side of the trunk. You will need to remove the cover to see the motors and gears. Hi,

the problem is that the lower edge of the soft-top is colliding with the storage compartment lid as it is lowering into the storage compartment, correct?
as for the strings that hold the soft-top liner in place, the dealer offers a few different re-string kits. the one that my car seems to need every 6 months or so is the $15 one that contains the string and a metal clamp to put on the end of the string. take a look to see what the problem is. did the string break in the middle? did one of the metal clamps on the ends slide off? did one of the plastic mounting brackets or a metal ring break off? if one of the brackets or rings broke, you'll need the $40 kit from the dealer. if a string broke, or if a metal clamp slid off, you can save yourself some cash by buying a similar spool of cord from a fabric store and tying a knot instead of using a clamp. the dealer's kit doesnt come with a pre-cut string, it tells you how long to cut the string, but their recommendation didnt really fit my car properly. you can figure out an appropriate length by trial and error, just dont cut the string until you find a good length.

My soft top was stucked for a long time because I use the hard top during hot weather. Now I remove the hard top and the soft top wont close. I tried to re-sync it (pulled the manual lever under rear seat, removed the fuse #7, open the trunk and re-engaged both motors to the gears, closed the trunk and replaced the fuse #7. push the convertible button down, start the engine wait for ten seconds until the boot cover close down completely.) I got this proceedure from another source, but im not sure if thats correct way to re-sync it. After that I pusshed the close button and the boot cover opened, roof went out and thats it. the boot cover didnt went back to its place where it should be.

How about a key ?

Luggage Compartment Description and Operation (Sedan)
Rear Compartment Lid Release
The rear compartment lid can be released in one of three ways:
• Inserting the key into the key lock cylinder, if equipped
• Operating the rear compartment lid release switch
• Using the keyless entry fob
To operate rear compartment lid with the rear compartment lid release switch or with the rear compartment release button on the key fob, the gear selector may be in any position, but vehicle speed must equal 0 for the rear compartment lid to release.
When the rear compartment lid release switch is pushed, the rear compartment lid release signal circuit to the body control module (BCM) is grounded. BCM then grounds the coil side of the trunk release relay through the trunk release relay control circuit. With this voltage is applied to the rear compartment lid release actuator, opening the rear compartment.

do you know how to do electrical testing ?

Circuit/System Verification
Ignition ON, observe the scan tool Trunk Release Switch parameter while pressing and releasing the rear compartment lid release switch. The parameter should change between Active and Inactive.
? If the parameter does not change, refer to Trunk Release Switch Malfunction.
Command the trunk release with a scan tool, the rear compartment lid latch should release the trunk lid.
? If the rear compartment lid latch does not release, refer to Rear Compartment Lid Latch Malfunction

You may want to take it to a repair shop .

Rear Compartment Lid
The rear compartment lid can be opened by operating the rear compartment lid release switch, located on the instrument panel, or by using the manual release located on the rear compartment lid. Battery voltage is supplied to the rear compartment lid release relay through the Main Power fuse. The roof and door module (RDM) receives the rear compartment lid release request via the rear compartment lid release switch signal circuit. The RDM grounds the rear compartment lid release relay coil when a release input is received through the instrument panel (I/P) switch. Grounding the coil causes the rear compartment lid release relay to energize, providing power to the rear compartment lid latch assembly through the rear compartment lid release actuator supply voltage circuit.
As an alternate method of operating the rear compartment, an emergency release handle is accessible from within the rear compartment. When the handle is slightly pulled, it will provide a ground for the bed cover release relay which will cause the actuator to operate and open the rear compartment lid. If the handle is pulled further, it will mechanically open the lid, so even if the battery is discharged or there is an electrical concern, the emergency release handle will mechanically open the lid.

As an alternate method of operating the rear compartment, an emergency release handle is accessible from within the rear compartment.

My trunk will not open. When I take off battery cable and replace, it opens once. Is there an easy fix? relay etc?

When the rear compartment lid release switch is pushed, the rear compartment lid release signal circuit to the body control module (BCM) is grounded. BCM then grounds the coil side of the trunk release relay through the trunk release relay control circuit. With this voltage is applied to the rear compartment lid release actuator, opening the rear compartment.
Rear Compartment Lid Release Relay
  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the trunk relay.
  2. Test for 65-90 ohms of resistance between terminals 85 and 86.
  3. ?‡'
If the resistance is not within the specified range, replace the trunk relay.

  4. Test for infinite resistance between the following terminals:

If less than infinite resistance, replace the rear compartment lid release switch.

Could be the relay , could be the switch , could be a problem with the BCM !

Trunk locks not opening

This is very complex if your not familiar with how Class 2 serial data communications work . When you press that trunk lid release button it sends a low voltage signal to the BCM - body control module. Here is how the factory service info. says how it works .
When the vehicle is in park and the trunk release switch is pressed it grounds the rear compartment lid release switch input in the Body Control Module (BCM). The BCM then sends a Class 2 message to the Remote Function Actuator (RFA). The RFA supplies an internal ground for the coil side of the rear compartment lid release relay activating the relay. The rear compartment lid release actuator receives battery voltage through the 15 A trunk release fuse when the relay closes. Ground is supplied by G400.
Your best bet is to take your vehicle to a dealer or some other qualified repair shop that has a factory scan tool or a professional grade type .
You could check the TRK/REL relay in the rear fuse/ relay box .Because you can't test the class 2 data to the rear integrated module. Fuse Block Rear

Locked out of trunk 2000 cadillac eldorado release button not working i removed lock on trunk still cant get in trunk

Pressing the rear compartment lid release switch provides an input signal to the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster sends a Class 2 serial data message to the body control module (PZM). The PZM grounds connector C6 of the rear compartment lid release solenoid through CKT 1344 (LT BLU) if the following conditions are present:
?€¢
The transaxle is in the PARK position.

?€¢
The valet lockout switch is closed.

Power is supplied through the following components to the now-grounded CKT 1344 (LT BLU):
?€¢
The RADIO/PHONE fuse

?€¢
CKT 40 (ORN)

?€¢
The coil of the rear compartment lid release relay
The relay coil energizes and closes the relay contacts.
Power is supplied from the CONVENIENCE fuse through the following components:
?€¢
CKT 2040 (ORN)

?€¢
The now-closed relay contacts

?€¢
CKT 56 (BLK/WHT)

?€¢
The rear compartment lid release solenoid
The solenoid energizes and the rear compartment lid latch assembly releases the rear compartment lid.

My trunk won't open. What's wrong

Hi Annette, Im AL the owner of Big As Auto Repair.

Annette, if you are already able to get inside the trunk, remove the lever that goes to the lock actuator because the actuator may be locked up. Then see if it will open. NOTE: If the lock solenoid is mounted to the latch this will not work. If that doesn't help, then see if you can remove the bolts that hold the latch to the trunk and open the trunk that way so you can see better what the problem could be. Keep me posted at my auto-repair-website here: http://www.bigasautorepair.com/

From the manual:
  • Open the rear lid.
  • Open the cover on the backside of the luggage compartment. To open the cover, turn the two "quick-releases" and fold the cover down.
  • Reach through the opening by the fuel filler flap. Grab the cable with th plastic covering and pull down. The filler flap will open by itself.
Best of luck!
