Question about 1994 Toyota Camry

I have a 94 camry V6 XLE with 150K miles. It overheated and the mechanic says it's the water pump. But he also says the camshaft seals are leaking and this will make the timing belt break. My question is whether to just replace the water pump or pay $850 for the seals and new timing belt. Is it worth putting this much money into the car? Any advice? (I don't know if the timing belt has ever been changed; it could be the original belt)

94 w/150k? This your call. This vehicle is 15 yrs behind in technology, It's condition mechanically will get progressively worse at a faster rate.In the 70's the life expectancy of the average vehicle was 3-5 yrs, in the 80's,5--7, 90's 10-15 yrs , now 15-25 yrs.. The newer vehiles have better warranties, better fuel mileage,and safety fearures. But, the 94 is paid for, still gets reasonable fuel mileage. What about brakes,tires, transmission issues and overall condition? All need to be considered when looking at 500.00 trade in and 2-00 - $400.00 a month in payments.. This car can also take you another 50 - 70,000 miles. At 10,000 miles a year. That's another 5 - 7 years of service and no payments. Normal maintenance will keep it in dependable condition. I'm not a car salesman and I own a 96 buick and a 2003 silverado. To me, $850 a pop unexpectedly would displease me . I traded in and got 1,000 for a 87 pick up and paid 23,000 for the 03 @ 485.00 per month, Used with 26,000 miles on it.. I had my own business doing well and 485 was hard to swallow. It has 92,000 on it now and haven't had anything serious go wrong that the warranty didn't cover. No major repairs. I think Chev and hondas are the two best if all. Stay away from Fords and dodge. Look over this site and see which ones you see the most of with nuisance problems and a few matorhunt and pecks the dealers that sell them can't help fix. Anyway, Spending more for repairs is your call as is the replacement. Good Luck.

You don't say what engine it has. The 4-cyl was a better than the V6 for oil leaks.

The V6 had oil leaks from

-rear bank cam cover gasket

-distributor o-ring seal

-oil filter bracket o-ring seal

-crankshaft nose oil seal (less common)

-rear main bearing oil seal (expensive, just leave it)

The 4 cyl leaked oil from

-distributor o-ring seal

-camshaft cover gasket

-rear main bearing seal (expensive, leave it)

Quite possibly the motor will be OK after replacement of one or both head gaskets. This can be done with the engine still in the car. The definitive tests for whether this is needed are a compression test (shows head gasket leaks) and a radiator leak-down test (shows water jacket coolant leaks).
If it turns out the job is required it is a good idea to have the timing belt and water pump replaced also, and the crankshaft nose and camshaft oil seals. The cylinder head faces and mating block faces must be carefully checked for flatness.
Although more expensive it is advisable to specify genuine Toyota seals and gaskets as the cheaper non-genuine ones do not last on this engine.
The V6 has several characteristic oil leaks which develop, and that may not be related to the head gasket problem. It will leak from
- rear bank cam cover gasket, onto the exhaust- distributor shaft o-ring seal- oil filter bracket o-ring seal (if present)
These can be replaced at the same time.
The alternative is to have a 2nd hand motor fitted, which is always an unknown, but if you can get a warranty that will be better.
Get several quotes for each alternative, and try to gauge the reputation of the mechanics

94 toyota camry xle v6 overheating noticed leak in overflow res.


I think the leakage out of the reservoir is being caused by the overheating, not the other way round.

This can be caused by several things:

- failed thermostat (not opening)
- failed temperature sensor (not turning on the fans)
- blown fuse or failed relays in fan supply (if electric)
- soft hose from radiator to water pump "sucking in" and preventing flow
- blown head gasket allowing combustion gas into the water jacket (less likely)

Mechanic did a timing belt with water pump and front cam and crank seals and ps pump . when I picked it up i thought it was noisy. my wife said it had a noise after 1st time she drove it. What may have...


To do the camshaft seal, he had to take the cam out or at least loosen the rockers. He probably didn't adjust the rockers properly after reinstalling the cam.

Is it coming from the driver side, passenger side, front or rear of the engine? It could be a cam or crank seal if it is coming from the passenger side behind the plastic timing cover.

There are a few places it could be leaking from, first it could be a cooling line leaking, secound if its got a detent cable it could leak from there, third it could be leaking from dip stick tube, forth oil pan could have a hole in it or gasget is leaking, fith front pump seal or rear seal could be leaking. Everything can be fixed with trans. in car except front seal witch requires trans to come out.
