Sounds like a short. Check to see if it is grounded properly.

When not running the engine for a week, the battery dies. When I jump start it, engine will start cranking very slow and pickup speed before it starts running.

it seems like the battery is going. clean battery terminals, also the grounding to the body (engine block, transmission, etc.) all should be shiny cleaned. suggest you go to autozone (or other auto parts) for a free battery & alternator tests.

Brake and battery light on new battery and alternator installed

Wouldn't be a fuse, but it seems as if the alternator is still not putting out normal power, or else your battery has a problem taking a charge. Better have the battery tested for a dead cell. also see what a voltmeter says about alternator output now. If you have an electrical problem in the wiring somewhere or in the alt. charging controls, then possibly one or more of the diodes in the alternator may got burnt out. That means the alternator puts out less power.
On some newer cars, the engine computer, pcm, controls the rate of charge of the alternator. So you have to be careful diagnosing -know how your system operates. That's why mechanics always ask for year, make, model, and engine size if applicable.

Alternator not charging

Possible short to the starter. I had a similar problem with my '91 mercury capri. I replaced the alternator and battery but the alternator would not charge the battery. My local mechanic spent hours tracking it down, but finally found the problem. Have not had a problem since. Good luck

I have a 1990 Volvo 240 recently the car started to die at random times while driving. When it dies all the dash lights come on can't start it for a bit afterwards. I replaced the battery and it seemed...

  • This is classic of your alternator going bad. Sometimes, when it first begins to go bad it will function on and off. Soon it just stops charging the battery all together. The battery has one function and that is to start the car. Then the alternator is ran by the belt and charges the battery and in effect runs the car. The reason for the lights coming on is the power fail in the car.
  • Buying a new battery worked for a short time because the fresh battery ran the car but with no alternator to charge the battery the car soon died again.
  • The fix is to replace the alternator. Do it soon or even that new battery will go bad from being drained so much.

Charging stystem seems to be working..... But when ever the miss's gets inthe car to go to work, she will get 10 miles and the battery light will start flashing, then get solid and she will lose the head...

When this happens, are the gauges dropping or not working properly or at all? Check the alternator. May not be charging so everything is running off the battery. The battery is used mostly for starting, but the alternator recharges the battery, so if after driving for a short while, and alternator not charging, everything electrical will drain the battery. You can sometimes drive the car for a while when this happens, or if the alternator goes out completely, the car will not run at all.

Battery not charging light comes on. new battery

I don't know what kink of car you have, but some will have a alternator fuse, also with a volt meter check voltage on big wire at back of alternator should have 13.5 + volt's, then check voltage at battery should have same voltage there also, do this with car running, if you do not have same voltage at battery less short between alternator and battery or bad fuse. There also some fuse links at starter on some car's.

Vehicle cuts out while driving and wont turn on replaced

Have you seen any warning lights on the dash come on? My nephew had a short in one of the wires going to into the plug for the alternator. The alternator was only charging intermittently. The car will run until the battery is completely discharged and then you are stuck. Have the alternator checked again and move around some of the wires at the plug and see if it effects the alternator output. I ended up soldering the wire that was shorting out into the plug. Batteries can also be deceiving. Just because a battery seems to take a charge, if there is a cell shorting out, it is only a matter of time before the battery discharges. You may want to put a different battery into the car that you know is good and see if that makes a difference as well. Hope this helps some and good luck. I hate electrical problems.....what a pain!! lol

Battery is dead if it isn't started every hour.

Make sure he didn't put the wrong alternator in there. Sounds like it's charging too much, or shorting out somewhere. Take your starter in and have it checked.
