Key stuck in ignition

2006 HHR has key stuck in ignition. Dealer needs to replace shifter assembly to fix the problem. This looks like it may be a common problem in the HHR. This should be a recall on the vehicle.

This is a VERY common problem and there is a campaign though I am not sure it ever made it to full recall. The ultimate answer is to have the ignition switch replaced. In the meantime, you'll need to be able to get that key out. On the bottom side of the steering column there is a one inch square rubber plug that you pry out. You can then use your pointer finger to push the switch in. This will release the lock and let you turn your key to the off position and remove. You may want to leave this plug out as you'll be doing this a lot until it is repaired.

My key is stuck in the ignition in the on position and I cant turn my 2009 hhr off. How can I get my key to turn and come out?

FIRST make sure that your shifter is all the way up into the PARK position. Then make sure that the button on the shifter is not sticking. This button operates a switch that energizes a solenoid to keep the key from returning all the way back to the OFF position. If the button is stuck in, sometimes it can be released by tapping on the shift lever. This is a VERY COMMON problem.

I have an hhr that the key is stuck in the ignition. I've been told it is a gear shift assembly problem. How much is that to purchase if my husband installs it. Is it a part I can even purchase? Autozone...

the problem is the key tumbler. You will need to have it replaced. Its not gear shift issue. go to mitchell1diy online for the procedures to replace it. Once you get the procedures then you will be able to tell if you want to tackle this.

My 2006 HHR ignition switch would not allow key to move out of "run" position. Lock cylinder came apart. No cylinders available in country. Why?

shifter pin is broken that is why the switch will not come out of run. the shifter assembly needs to be replaced to fix the key not turning back.

Key stuck in ignition - 2007 HHR Automatic

I have posted this several times I have a 2006 HHR and I agree with you but here is a cheap solution. There is a pin that goes thru the shift cable that is falling out. Above the window buttons pry the little plastic holder out remove the 2 screws take the plastic off of the sides of the console you will see a black plastic frame with holes in it I cut a larger hole between 2 of the small holes with a hack saw on the driver side. Put the car in neutral drivers seat all the way back pull on the shift button and you will see the pin pull it out with a pair of needle nose pliers. I put 598 black loctite sealant on mine and reinstall. Shift back to park if you can get the key out and the doors unlock you have the pin in the right spot and it is making both switches when in park. You can see if it is on the switches by looking thru the hole where the little holder came out. The pin sticks out about a 1/2" on each side. Good luck

start with the shifter. a common problem is the shifter is not making connection with the switch to tell the car its in park. jar ( hit) the shifter some and see if this doesnt let the key release. if this doesnt work then on plastic covering under the ignition switch is a small opening with a plastic cover. Remove the cover, feel with your finger until you find the release button for the key. The key will then come out.
