Question about 1996 Oldsmobile Bravada

Disturbed timing...need info on resetting non-adjustable timing.

I have a '96 Bravada with a 4.3L 262 v6. The distributor was disturbed while removing the lower intake manifold, but wasn't marked beforehand. I found compression in the number 1 spark plug hole, took the belt off and hand cranked the crankshaft pulley to line up the timing marks, and set the distributor, which appeared to point towards number one spark plug. When trying to start, it was backfiring through the intake, which seems to suggest 180 out. I picked up the dist. and turned it 180, dropped it back down, and it started but ran VERY rough, so it is still out of time. The distributor is non adjustable on this model. Am I missing something or doing it in the wrong order? Help Please!

Sounds like your off just one tooth, try pulling up dist. and back it up one tooth( counter clockwise) and try it again. When you reinstall the dist. it always goes in just before #1 not right on #1. Your in the ball park.

You have to get # 1 up on compression, have the 2nd line on damper line up with the notch on timing cover.
the rotor button must point to the number 6 on the dist case. It has a number 8 and a 6. When this is lined up, the rotor will be pointing at number 1. Lokk at the way the terminals cross over in the dist cap,

What should my timing be on a 1997 olds bravada at idle and at max advance

There are no specifications for what you are asking for. Timing is checked by using a scan tool and reading the camshaft offset at idle. It should be 0 +/- 2 degrees. This is NOT adjustable. This is only for reference to see if there is excessive play in the timing chain or the distributor shaft.
Here is what the service manual states about ignition timing:

"NOTE : The Distributor is located in a fixed, non-adjustable position. No attempt should be made to adjust the engine base timing by rotating the distributor. Attempting to do so may result in engine cross-fire and mis-fire conditions. Timing is not adjustable."

Hello eggy753: My name is Roger and I will answer your question. GM did put a timing mark and notch on the engine. How every the timing is not adjustable. A quote from All Data and stated. NOTE. ( The distributor is located in a fixed, non- adjustable position. No attempt should be made to adjust the engine base timing by rotating the distributor. Attempting to do so will result in engine cross fire and mis-fire conditions.Timing is not adjustable }.Static timing is set off of the timing gear alignment. After so many miles on the distributor,the oil seal can wear out. Oil and vapor can slowly enter the senor area and cause fail rotation/spot information to the computer ECU.

In order to inspect for potential oil leak inside the distributor,you must be pretty handy.

Pull the cap and rotor and inspect them for oil.

Look directly into the shaft of the distributor and see is there any loose plastic (from the cover) or metal particle.

This key is to keep it clean.

Use a can of compress air if you have one.

Put the cap and rotor back on. Make sure all the wires are secure and reset the code.

or disconnect,wait 2 minutes and reconnect battery cable.

If you see oil the you will need to locate and replace the rubber seal.

Oil and electronic part does not play well together,

96 bravada replaced fuel still no start runs with starter fluid

If your getting gas and spark get an obd 2 scan tool and check your mass air flow sensor. I had the same problem. If your having a problem with this vehicle always check the computer first; it will save you tons of headaches later.

Found TDC but rotor not on Cylinder #1?

when you bring the piston to TDC on the compression stroke
slide the distributor in and point the rotor towards the number one cylinder once you get it all back together but dont tighten the distributor down tight because you still have to adjust timing

if you overhauled the engine and replaced the timing chain & gears, as long as you installed them properly and have installed the ign wires in the right places, the distributor is "locked in place" and is non adjustable (unless you are me, but that's another story) Computer makes all timing changes.
