1999 mitsubishi galant V-6 3.0L. noise under valve cover.

My car loses oil about a quart every 1000 miles. i forgot to put oil in and now it is very loud under the valve cover but only at 1000 to 1500 r.p.m.s if the r.p.m.s goes higher than the noise is aleviated like the isnt a problem. sometimes the noise is real loud and other times just loud but only between 1000 to 1500 r.p.m.s i took off the valve cover for the front and had it started and a bunch of little jets were shooting oil out so i dont think i burned out my pump. i believe the hydraulic lash adjuster(s) is/are bad. how do i check? do i replace just the bad ones or all of them and how do i check to see if they are bad? please help. thanks everyone!!

Difficult to say.
Chances are all of the valves and lifters along with the cam bearings have been damaged due to lack of oil. To what degree of damage or excessive wear is difficult to say.
You might be able to remove the lifters and examine them but it might make more sense to replace all of them to be sure.
Expect more noise as time goes on from the cam.

Sounds like you have one of two problems. If the car has over 80,000 miles on the odometer, your idle air control motor (basically an electrical solenoid valve which allows additional air into the motor past the closed throttle valve) is sticking open.
The other possibility is a vacuum leak. I would try removing the IAC (idle air control motor) and cleaning it using aerosol carb or throttle body cleaner. This is available at any auto parts store. Re-install the valve and see if there is an improvement. If it improves but reverts to it's old behavior (usually within a day to a week) you will need to replace the valve.

SOURCE: loud knocking or tapping sound when engine is cold

Take our oil pan off from under your car and there should be 4 to 5 covers over a rod bearing. wiggle each one of them and find out which one is loose. take that cover off of the one that is wiggling and get the rod bearing out. order a new one from auto zone and replace it. The knocking in your motor can end up where you will need a whole new motor. so get it done before its to late.

SOURCE: 1996 Mitsubishi Galant Timing Belt and Oil Pump Timing

THe timing of the oil pump is irrelevent as no matter where it is timed as long as it is pumping oil. you must have a leak from a cam or crank seal or maybe the oil pressure sender. hope this helps. regards Ben.

SOURCE: I have an 2001 mitsubishi

It is a lifter ticking. They are called hydraulic lifters. They have a spring inside them, when the car is running it builds oil pressure. The oil pressure fills the lifter which gives the lifter a cushion so to speak. When a lifter is worn out it will not hold oil pressure as well as it use to. So I would say it is a lifter ticking. Nothing to be real concerned about. I had an old 6 cylinder that all of the lifters ticked in it and it ran forever. Probably still running somewhere! So it is not really a concern. If you want to you could run 10w40 oil in it, which is a little thicker. This may help.

Believe it or not, it is normal for these engines to use about a quart every 2000 even when they are essentially new. Note that I said, "use", not "burn". The combination of higher compression and operating temperatures causes oil to pass through the engine. You might notice your tail pipes have a good coating on the inside. I managed to slow the process by converting to Mobil 1 0W40. I get much better performance and I only use a quart every 3500-4000.

04 Grand Prix oil leak

if it is not leaking then it is being burned by the engine, how many miles go by before you need to add oil?, if u are adding more than one quart every 1000 miles u have piston reing problems and or valve guide seal leaks. U won't see any smoke in most cases unless you are really going through the oil, like 1 quart every 300 miles.

As soon as the car is put in gear there is a low rumbling rubbing sound this happen in drive or reverse. When you speed up the noise quits. We just bought this car and test drove it and it didn't make the...

Galants use a special automatic transmission fluid . It needs to be changed at 30,000 mile intervals or the transmission will malfunction. You can change it just like changing your engine oil . You can purchase OEM ATF at the Mitsubishi dealer or a synthetic equivalent at the auto store. It's about $6 to $7 dollars a quart and you will probably 5 or 6 quarts. This is the cheapest thing to try to solve your problem.

One quart of oil leak out each day. Was told I need to replace the valve cover gasket. Is this so?

If you are losing a quart a day, you had better fix something, that is a lot. I can't see you losing that much through the rocker cover though unless you drive 300 miles a day.Is it puddling up under the car? Or burning off the exhaust when you stop? Rocker cover gaskets are tricky, they take a lot of patience and time.

Oil capacity?

With the filter this motor is right @ 4.5 quart. In practice most will put in the full 5 quarts with no issues. The extra .5 quart will not cause the crank to splash in the oil.

Oil consumption, rattle, engine noise

Check under the hood and inspect the valve cover gasket. If it's bad it would explain why you don't see any leaks on the ground because it's probably burning off on the manifold. This ticking you're hearing is a lack of lubrication to the rocker arms. Apart from the valve cover gasket, you should get under the car and inspect the oil pan and oil filter for seepage. Best of luck on your problem.
