check for a bad earth in the system . Possibly the earth strap on the motor or dirty battery terminals . IF the temp gauge will not work (bad earth ) and the ac stops working ( cabin air temp reaches setting) or the circuit has an earth problem switching off the ac. Check all wires for broken , not connected properly and check each earth point for clean and tight.

Fuel gauge

I don't think you could trust that either. Sounds like the sending unit in the tank is messed up, so it may never read correctly. By now, you must know the approximate miles per gallon it gets, so until you get the gauge fixed, you should go by the number of miles you go to know when it needs gassing up. Just as a ballpark figure, a '97 Sierra, city driving, maybe 15-17 mpg? I really don't know, you could google it I'm sure.

Hey, saw your posting and just wanted to ask if you found a solution to that problem because I'm having the exact same problem. I just started this morning, my gauge showed it as being in the red area so i figured it was bout to overheat. But when I would accelerate the temp gauge would start to come down to a normal level. But everytime I stop it would elevate to the red area. I havent tried the thermostat thing( it seems it didnt work for you I see) If you find a solution enlighten me at my email...Kbrodie@ci.durham.nc.us

Start with changing fuel filter, then if that doesn't work, your fuel pump may be going bad.
