The mark you are looking for is on the flywheel. Remove the plastic plug in top of the bell housing to reveal a small arrow. Rotate engine until the flywheel TDC mark lines up with this arrow

Check with Autozone and discuss your problem. They know what they are talking about and have always come up with the right parts or belts for me. I used to be a mechanic in my youth and I never go anywhere else.........

There were 4 different engine sizes for that year truck.
It looks like the belt route is the same for all.
I hope this helps. God Bless

Replace alternator

The alternator belt on the 1999 Dodge Caravan also controls the air conditioner compressor, the water pump and the power steering pump. The belt is called a serpentine belt, and it is designed to fit around all of the accessory pulleys at the same time. As the belt travels around each accessory pulley, it enables the accessory to operate. Once the belt is damaged, cracked or frayed, you should change it before it breaks. If that happens, each of the accessories will stop working.

Open the hood and prop it up so that it does not fall. Engage the parking brake.

Inspect the top surface of the fan shroud for the serpentine belt routing diagram. Follow the routing instructions on the diagram to install the new belt.

Locate the serpentine belt self-adjusting tensioner on the front of the engine. The tensioner is directly below the alternator. Use the bolt that connects the tensioner pulley to the tensioner arm to rotate the tensioner.

Turn the tensioner device counterclockwise to move the tensioner. This will relieve the tension from the belt. Once the belt has enough slack in it, slide the belt out from under the tensioner pulley.

Lift the belt off each accessory pulley. Slide the belt around the fan blades and out of the engine area.

Lay the old belt next to the new belt to ensure that the new belt is the correct width and length. Slide the belt around the fan blades and around the crankshaft pulley on the bottom of the engine.

Follow the belt routing diagram to position the belt around the air conditioner compressor pulley, the power steering pump pulley, the water pump pulley and the idler pulley. Once the belt is routed inside each accessory pulley, inspect the belt to make sure that it is securely inside the pulleys.

Crank the 1999 Dodge Caravan for 10 to 15 seconds to completely seat the belt ribs in the grooves on each accessory pulley. Shut the engine off and close the hood.

If the belt routing diagram for the 1999 Dodge Caravan is missing, use a pen and a notepad to draw the exact routing of the old belt and use it when installing the new belt.

When you put an idler pulley on, what is the best way to get the belt back on a 2002 Chev duramax diesel without taking everything apart?

Follow diagram on the radiator housing. Put belt on harmonic balancer first then work you way around each pulley according to the diagram. It is a tight fit but it can be done. Get the belt on all the pulleys except the alternator. Use a 3/8" breaker bar or socket wrench to pull up on the tensioner and slip the belt over the alternator pulley. Install with ribbed side of belt to ribbed pulley, smooth side of belt to a smooth pulley. Each type of truck will have a different routing pattern.

Advice on changing 2004 Discovery serpentine belt

Remove the upper fanshroud, it unclips then pull upwards to remove. Remove the fan from the waterpump with a fan wrench. Also becareful not to puncture the radiator. Then remove A/C compressor pulley(some cars have the ACE pump mounted next to A/C compressor which uses the same cover) cover to completely expose the belt routing. Be careful removing the 10mm bolts. They bolt through two pedastals and often fall. So you have to hold the bolt, cover, and pedastals. There's two bolts holding the cover. This next step is important especially if your car is missng the belt diagram. Draw the belt routing on a piece of paper. Then remove beltension at the tensioner. Install belt around all the pulleys in the diagram except the alternator. Use the same step to install belt on alternator pulley which is always the last pulley to fit belt onto. Then reverse procedure and tighten all bolts.

Diesel Serpentine Belt

I have never heard of a spare pulley on an engine. If everything is working, (alternator, water pump, power steering, AC compressor ) then I guess I would not worry about it. The only other thing could be that some one placed a belt on the truck just to get it by until they could get a correct belt to fit. They are routed on top and below pulleys and it is possible to skip a pulley temporarily if you get a smaller one to get you by until the correct one can be located. Good luck
