Question about 2006 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx
I have read other posts where the writers had problems with their power steering. It freaked me out the otherday when after starting the car I proceeded to drive out the driveway when the electric power steering went off. he message on the info board on the dash just said problem with power steering. I was able to back up and park the vehicle. Called Onstar and had them do a diagnostic and found no problems. Left the car and being a weekend could not get any help. My husband jumps in on Monday morn (tuesday actually - long weekend) starts up the car and drives it to the dealer with absolutely no problems. I have read that it resets itself. Can this happen while driving on the highway as I can see this a being potentially dangerous? Should I be scared and worried? The dealer did nothing to the car as basically there was nothing to do. 2004 Malibu Power steering went out with light coming on indicating power steering. Steered hard but not impossible. Looked up in owners manual and they indicated it would not hurt it to drive. Like Rogers's, it started working again the next time I drove it. It has done it 3 times now. Just before the steering went out it acted loose and jerky in the steering like the hydraulic power steering acts when it is low on fluid. Took it to dealer, they could not look at it then but told me to bring it in when it was doing it. I may go to a parts store and have the code read to see if it gives a clue. Hope it does not need to be replaced. It almost feels like it is binding. I dropped off the edge of a pavement and scraped bottom a few weeks back and I thought maybe I bent something but it worked alright at the time so I did not pursue it. electronic power steering fails at any given time. Car has been to a dealer, but without the steering failing for him in two days. I'm not a mechanic, however just 30 min. of research online and this seems to be a pretty common problem. I would like a definate solution before I sink 500.00 to 800.00 bucks into this. Why is this not a recall. I would think a steering issue to be pretty serious. i had the same problem with my car, same make and model...while driving...last winter mind you, the power steering would die and come back on, and when it came back on, the cars steering wheel would actually **** left to right doing full turns on the steering wheel,...very scary, its kinda like when you go to an arcade and play one of them racing games and you have no control over the steering wheel jerking to the left of the right. it costed GM about 900 to fix this problem because it was still under warranty thank god.
I would check the stearing rack check. ive seen them go bad. and do what your talking about.
