Our 2003 Kia Rio (automatic transmission) car start up fine, but when idling it makes a knocking noise and refuses to accelerate beyond 20-25mph. It frequently jerks forward when accelerating, doesn't want to switch gears. RPMs rapidly increase but car doesn't respond to it as it should. The only change recently we have made was putting oil into the car. We used 5W-20, as recommended by a Walmart auto center associate. Could this be our problem or is it something more serious?
Get a free codes check from one of the auto-zone or O'reillys type stores. This should point you in the right direction. BTW, did this problem first start after the wal-mart oil change?
Do you have a knock sensor code?? And don't take advice from guy working at Walmart ... You would do better asking a chimp..they are not mechanics

First I suggest a full tune up, including air and fuel filters. If you have already taken care of this, then you maybe overloading or flooding your engine with fuel. If the problem seems worse when you first start the car in the morning and gets slightly better as it warms up then you may have a bad coolant temperature sensor. This is about a $30 part. This sensor adjusts the amount of fuel pumped through your injectors to make up for cold temps much like choking an older vehicle. If it goes out, it sends the ECM a signal that the temp is negative 27 f and so it dumps all the fuel it can on the fire to compensate. A good indicator of this would be poor fuel milage, with this car you should be getting between 27 and 32 mpg. Most mechanics charge about 60 to 90 bucks to change this part.
SOURCE: rough idle / varying oil pressure when accelerating
Ok not to keen on newer vehicles actually prefer the carburated ones, but oil pressure is supposed increase on your gauge when accelerating. If it wasn't going up before and just staying at 40 the needle might have been stuck. But idle should be 40 lbs and when you work the moter (reving or driving down the road) the guage should show an increase for every 1000 rpm above idle. Second if you can get a hand held scanner (bought mine off ebay for $30) check for any codes in your computer you will probably find that you either have a bank running wrong or some other sensor that needs to be changed. I'd go with getting my own scanner it saves alot of money and time, garages make their money here.

i have a 2001 ford taurus and it did the same thing a while back, call the dealer and ask them for the sensor that is behind the brake pedal. It is not the transmission .. cost less that 25 bucks to fix and takes about 20 min

sound like a intake leak.dirty fuel injectors.fuel pump problems.
SOURCE: Engine makes a rapping noise at idle and under throttle.
The rapping noise makes me think that it might be a broken belt or even the lifters. It could be even your fan. Check the blades to se if they are bent or broken.
