Question about 2004 Dodge Ram 1500
I have a 1 hour comute to work each day. In the morning the temp runs at about 3/4 hot on the gauge but in the afternoon going home its abov 3/4 and just about to red line. it seems to cool down when I get on the city roads though. I havee already changed the thermostat. I also have a 2004 Dodge ram and mine starts to run hot when going up hills. Once on the downhill or straighaway it cools off.
The 2002- 2007 Dodge Ram 1500 4.7 L. has a single core radiator with flat fins that become easily plugged with scale and other stuff floating around in your motors cooling system. Since these fins are so small about .040 of an inch good luck flushing out any clogged particles by doing a flush. Many of the online part stores have replacement radiators for less than $120.00 (Rock Auto, for example). Replace the radiator with a new unit. Make sure to flush the engine block and heater core before connecting back to new radiator. I completed this job over the past weekend in less than 3.0 hours start to finish. Have less than $220.00 in all hoses, Thermostat, Radiator and new coolant.

Your problem seems to run contrary to how it should be working if there was an obstruction inside the radiator and also seems to be reacting to ambient temps (warmer in afternoon than in AM.) However, it seems that both radiators are partially plugged, causing temps to rise out of range when engine is working hard or when air temp is insufficient to keep coolant at the proper temp. If you did not have a gauge, likely you would not see this 'till there was a larger problem. Have both radiators flushed and see if problem disappears or lessens. also make sure that clutch fan & or electric fan is operating properly.
