Tow bar trailer socket wiring connection point to car wiring?

I wish to connect a towbar-trailer socket outlet mounted on the vehicles towbar to the existing car wiring.I was supplied with a loose wiring harness/loom,(not connected)with the towbar, which was fitted by the car dealer when I purchased the vehicle. The wiring harness/loom has a click-fit plastic connector on one end (which I assume is to be click-fitted into a special socket outlet) connected to the appropriate wiring with-in the vehicles main wiring harness) provided adjacent to the towbar location and it has seven(no.) colour coded loose wires unconnected at the other end which I assume were left to be connected to a standard(7) pin socket outlet mounted on the tow-bar. Can you advise me where the special socket outlet (to plug the supplied harness/loom into)is located or failing that, can you give me a wiring diagram which shows where I can connect the loose wiring harness/loom into the existing wiring. That was a mouthfull wasn't it,I hope you can help me! Thank you.

    Hi,

When I purchased the car it had the tow bar fitted but no trailer socket. The dealer told me that before I came along, the car had been ordered by another buyer who had pulled out of the deal at the last minute but not before the towbar had been part fitted(ie;without the trailer socket).

The dealer then tried to rip me off by offering to complete the installation for an outrageous price & I told him to stick it,so he then decided to leave it on at no extra cost to me (presumeably to save labour costs taking it off) & I agreed. My reasonong was I could fit the trailer socket myself as I am a retired electrician.

What I am basically looking for is either a wiring schematic or single line diagram of the vehicles electrics with details of where/how to connect the trailer socket outlet.I only propose to tow a small box trailer (6 by 4) to go to the dump or pick up a bit of gravel, builing supplies that sort of thing.

There is a little story behind the proposed installation of the trailer outlet & wiring.

I purchased the vehicle new from a dealer who had prepared it for sale for another client but somehow the deal fell through.During this process the dealer had proceeded to fit the towbar as requested by the previous buyer but when the deal fell through they stopped short of installing the wiring & the trailer outlet.I came along later & bought the vehicle but at the time I decided I didn't want a towbar so the dealer (in all his largesse) said he would leave it on at no extra cost to me if I wanted it,needless to say I excepted his offer.

I am a licensed Electrician (retired)so I thought I would wire it myself hence the plea for information/advice.

I was basically enquiring about how/where I could connect the wiring loom into the vehicles wiring system,(a wiring loom/harness) came with the towbar (as I described) in my original enquiry so if you did happen to have a wiring schematic or single line drawing of the vehicles wiring system or any other advice,I would be most grateful!

    Thanking you in anticipation.

If you can't get the info you need from the dealer, try going to a trailer installation shop. (either rental or other) It's very likely that they will have the info you need. Having been an electrician, you understand that the control modules used today are quite sensitive to loading and that they will fail if not connected through the correct equipment. Used to be you could just tap into the wiring and everything was fine. Now, if you do that, everything goes haywire and if the module fails it will cost far more than you want it to. I have done lots of automotive electronics over the years...enough to know that it's not only important to find the wires on a schematic but to learn the operating parameters of the power source.

To me, it sounds like an incomplete job...why did the dealer not connect the harness (like installing a radio and not hooking up the wiring!!) Vehicles equipped for towing generally have a plug in connector somewhere at the rear, often tucked inside a panel Others require that a module be added to keep the controller in the electrical system from failing when extra load from additional lighting is connected. I suggest you return to the dealer who made the install and find out what is needed to make this right before cutting into anything..

The connectors for towing wire harnesses on foresters are generally on the passenger side, below the rear taillight inside the cargo space. some require pulling up the foam block that is between the spare tire compartment and the taillight. Check where you replace the tailights from inside the car, if there isn't a matching connector hanging out there, check around the spare tire compartment, see if you can remove the carpeted foam block next to the compartment and find the plug under there.

No standard color codes. all you need is park light, signal left and right, brake light. easiest way is to connect the wires in the tail lights. hope this helps

2014 triton mn. How can I connect 7-pin trailer socket into existing wiring harness?

the simplest way to do this is to go to a tow bar installer shop and buy the harness ( around $25.00 aud)
it is a simple action of pulling a harness plug apart and inserting a piggy back plug in the connection
the wires for the trailer are properly installed and all you have to do is wire the plug connection according to the wiring diagram that came with the plug

I need wiring diagram for 1995 ford ranger XLT i need to hook up trailer lights

Unfortunately this model has separate filaments for the stop and turn signals. You will need to use an adapter relay to hookup a standard trailer plug or you will need a trailer that also uses this wiring setup. The first diagram below indicates there my be a trailer adapter for the turn signals at the base of the steering column. The wire colors at the bulbs are as follows:
tail/running lights: brown
stop: light green
left turn: light green/white stripe
right turn: white/light blue stripe
back up: black/pink stripe
ground: black

Please let me know if you have questions.

Need directions to fit towbar and wiring on holden captiva sx (2007)

there is a standard tow bar and a 2000kg for genuine tow bars
you need to remove both tail lights, the bumper bar and reinforcement bracket, spare wheel and exhaust hangars on rear mufflers, remove the tie down bracket on LHS chassis rail(dont need this or the bolts that hold it on), so you can then bolt in place either of the 2 tow bars.
genuine wiring patch harness for trailer plug is my suggestion since its plug straight into vehicle and interfaces with vehicle, goes in right hand rear compartment remove lid then remove box, interface connector for trailer harness is there.
instructions can be printed out from dealers if you ask
some new kits dont come with instructions in kits because information is on dealer computers
there is a template to print out to cut hole in bumper bar for tounge area of tow bar, uses centre square dimple in bar but its a bit wider.

Trailer battery charging from Ford F250 (tow vehicle) How to wire?

just basically have a possitive and a negative cable connected from the battery to a plug on the towbar. then in the trailer have a possitive and a negative connected to that battery and a plug from the trailer to connect with the towbar plug. if that makes sense, then it will charge when connected but maybe only connect when engine is running.
