Question about 1994 GMC Sonoma

1 Answer

Backfiring through exhaust

I changed the rotor and cap last week and that solved the starting problem. The truck sat for a week and we had rain. The truck wouldn't start again . We found the wires arcing. I put the new wires on and now it is running rough and backfiring. I have checked the firing order on the cap. 1-6-5-4-3-2 in a clockwise direction numerous times and I found a vac. line off but now I'm Stumped. -Russ

Check the plug wire from the ignition coil to the distributor cap.
If you haven't already, replace the distributor cap and rotor.
The GM Vortec's have issues with moisture getting inside the cap and rotor and causing problems.

My 83 Honda Civic won't start in the rain. Would changing the distributor cap mostly likely solve the problem?

The cap may help.......but there is more to the system that handles the high voltage.
In order of the most common trouble spots for wet no start.
First....ignition wire set..... 80%
2nd, I would change the ignition coil....10%
Then cap and rotor......10%

Why not change it all and have a dependable wet starting car.

Changed rotor, cap, wires&plugs now theSOB wont start and backfire

My 99 v8 gas ran fine before it went for a barge ride to alaska. weeks later it acted like timing was off, kick back when cranking etc. Corrosion had build up in cap and rotor from the salt air. First cleaned contacts and was much better, ordered and replaced cap and rotor, problem solved.
