Question about 2003 GMC Sierra 2500HD

1 Answer

Instrument cluster says " Service 4 Wheel Drive". No 4 wheel drive while this is on.

I have a 2003 GMC Sierra 2500HD DuraMax Diesel w/ Allison 4x4 transmission. My cluster is telling me to service my 4 wheel drive. It was working perfectly fine and now i have no choices to choose from (2wheel/4H/4L). Im stuck in 2 wheel. I took a look under the truck and the transfer case looks to be okay (no oil leaks). Is this a gimmick to get me into the shop or is there really a problem. I was told to unhook the battery for 15min and reset the computer and it should go away. I was also told to remove a blue fuse and this should reset it.....the guy didn't know which BLUE fuse to take out so i don't think ill be attempting that one. Does anyone have any suggestions? thanks in advance.

Two possibilites:
Have you been thru a car wash lately?

Also,
There is a sensor in the trans that senses what gear mode you're in...it either is working or it isn't....
are you still under warranty??

Front end makes noice when turning while engaged in 4 wheel drive

check front axle shafts cv joints one might be bad. also if you turn on a dry surface when 4x4 engaged it will bind and make noise. Jack front of truck up and try to wiggle wheel up,down all around as you may also have a bad wheel hub bearing that is clunking when turning.

Can I change my tires to a 265 R16 size, the actual original size of my GMC 2500 Sierra HD tires are 245 R16. My pick up have 6.6 diesel engine with an allison 6 speed transmition, and 2 x 4 configuration.

1st number is tread width (mm)265
r =speed rating
2nd is wheel size, in inches 16
the rule of thumb re tread width, is the tread should not exceed the inner wheel width, measured inside the wheel/tyre sealing area by more then 20mm.
otherwise car will tend to sway when steered for moose test.so check your wheels first...
r rating only good upto 100 mph intermitently...

My 2500hd s 4 wheel drive service warning is

The  actuator on the front diff or transfer case is stuck or bad. This will send a signal back and turn on the service light. In 2003 I believe the actuator is on the front differential.

4X4 inop on 2003 GMC Sierra 2500HD

I have found that when you are going to engauge 4x4 high, it is best to only be going about 3 miles an hour. Not faster, not stopped. It likes some movement to help it mesh. I've had perfect shifts since I started this. Hope it helps. Wade.
