Question about 2005 Dodge Caravan

Dash lights and gauges

When starting the van the gauges go all the way up and then back and the dash lights sometimes come on, ie the oil pressure light or all of the indicator lights for a brief period and then off again. does not seem to affect the performance of the van though, any ideas.

Oil pressure problem


in a shop we ignore the dash gauges and use REAL gauges.
we attach a real gauge to the sender port. on engine block.
and read the true pressure.
the lamp on most cars go on at 3 to 5psi.
this is catastrophic failure. that low.

my guess, is you let oil drop and you wrecked bearings.
but let the real gauge prove that , dont guess.

I have a 2003 3.7lt jeep sport with no oil pressure. what can cause this problem?


A low or no oil pressure reading verified either by your dash light or gauge, accompanied by tapping or knocking inside the engine indicates that a connecting rod, crankshaft or sometimes even a camshaft bearing has failed. If the engine has heavy internal sludge deposits, I'd also suspect a blocked oil pump pickup. Low or no reading can also be caused by a bad pressure sensor on the engine, or the wiring or the gauge may be faulty. To accurately determine exactly what the oil pressure is, it's best to install a mechanical test gauge so you get a direct reading.
Oil pumps often get blamed for pressure problems. By experience, of the hundreds I've seen, only one had actually failed. Most pumps are damaged or internally worn by debris from another failure (ie: bearings etc) Therefore replacing the pump fixes the result, not the cause and it fails again very soon.
If your engine is noisy, don't drive it. If you already have, chances are that the engine should be replaced as damage from no oil pressure is often extensive and debris migrates through and contaminates oil passages making in-car repairs less than reliable.

My oil pressure gauge (on the top right of the dashboard) randomly shows the oil pressure going down to zero (check gauge light comes on) and then randomly goes back into the normal range. It happens...


Did you compare what your dash gauge read when it was acting up and compare it to the manual gauge at the same time? I know you said you used the manual gauge and it read fine so if you get a proper reading out of the manual gauge and an improper reading out of the dash gauge then your dash gauge needs addressed.

Not the oil level sensor , Could also be the gauge is bad . You could try buying a used cluster at automotive salvage yard for $20 - 30 buck . Had a problem with chevy cavalier with the temp gauge showing overheating , just started the car so i know it wasn't overheating . Changed instrument cluster , the gauge work normally . the instrument cluster in these vans has problems with bad circuit board connections, u will need to have the dash removed and sent out for repair.

That is the oil pressure gauge not the oil level gauge. Sometimes they can act that way when the oil is thin. When is the last time the oil was changed? Try using a heavier weight oil. When engines wear they require thicker oil. What size engine does you voyager have?

How many miles are on your van? If it is alot of miles your trouble is likely engine wear, but if the miles are not that high or you know the van has been serviced like it should be than maybe replacing the oil pump will help the problem. Backing up now, the first thing to do is check the actual oil pressure with a known good manual gauge, not the light in the dash.

1995 astro oil pressure low on gauge


GM oil pressure senders have a pretty high failure rate. Since your van is over 10 years old, and pressure senders are not too expensive. 
I would start by replacing your sender...there's a pretty high likelihood that you will eventually replace it anyway. Change the oil and filter every 3000 miles and use a 10W30 with a Lucas oil treatment and with a can of Restor would not hurt ether.
Getting to expensive to buy and replace a good running van over some light routine mantance for around $20.00 every 3000 to 5000 miles.
