Question about 1998 Land Rover Discovery
My land rovers rear diferential leaked out all its fluid so they refilled it now it knocks every 10 ft when driving what can it be
It will be either a broken diff or a half shaft it is more likely to be a shattered diff due to running with no oil in it. the oil seal on the front of the diff is prone to leaking its not a hard job to change the diff buy a used on from some where like john craddocks or ebay .
to change the diff you need to pull the half shafts out of the rear axle so you can check these then and replace if damaged my guess is the diff is knakered Dan

Most likely, you need another rear diff. to be sure, the old part will need to be removed and inspected for damage. Sounds like some metal or a bearing got ruined from lack of lubrication, like a chipped tooth or a binding bearing. Make sure the rear driveshaft u-joints are OK. while you're at it. Have the Discovery put on a rack with the rear axle lifted, so the rear wheels can be spun by hand to listen to the rear diff. Sorry about your troubles

No need for a diagram, to drain the oil, there's a drain plug on the bottom of the transfer box, under the handbrake drum. To fill, the fill plug is about in line with the centre of the handbrake drum and to the left. I think both plugs are 1/2" square. Fill to overflow with Texaco Multi-Gear 75W/90R. Takes about 2L or so.
