Question about 2006 Ford Escape

1 Answer

Hydraulic pump noise

I am a single woman and the sole owner of a 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid 4WD. All was well until about 60,000 miles. At this time the hydraulic pump for the regenerative brakes (I know it is the pump as the change in sound is heard when unlocking the car, and before the engine is turned on) began to sound different -- kind of fluttery, not smooth like before. It may be louder as well. I went to the dealership and they didn't even know there should be a sound before the engine is turned on! I had to show them the page out of the manual -- which they copied. They kept the car and pulled another one off the lot and listened to the sound of the pump on both. They emailed Ford engineering and were told that these pumps "sometimes get louder the older the car is" and recommended that the pump be replaced at the amazing price of $4100! (They charged me $174.00 for "diagnostics"!) I was shocked. I am now trying to find out what the problem is with the pump and if it is indeed $4100 to fix. I am still paying on the car and have 24 more months of $675.31 a month to pay. I don't know what to do. I need a reliable car as I commute. I am even looking into getting another car (NOT a Ford!), but with this problem I cannot even ethically sell the car, and will get practically nothing as a trade in. Can you help me?

Thanks for responding to my question. I don't think it could be anything but the hydraulic pump for the regenerative brakes because the noise happens before the key is turn on. It starts when the door is unlocked. The manual says that the sound is the hydraulic pump. It is supposed to make a sound. It was when the sound changed to a fluttery, possibly louder sound that I noted a problem. Before it was a smooth sound. Also, I did contact Ford about this problem today.

2007 Ford Escape Hybrid Clatter Noise

So being it doesn't clatter in electric mode, a safe assumption is the noise is with the gas motor.

Usually a clattering noise is valvetrain noise, like a lifter not pumping up.

Low oil will cause this.

3 quarts low would probably definitely cause this!

You need to find out why you lost 3 quarts in only 80 miles!

I have a 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid. It just had 75000 mile check up. The wrench warning light comes on at times and the read out says "service soon". the service writer at the dealer says he has not seen...

The service writer thinks that is a Service engine soon warning it is not, I think it is some kind of needed maintence warning. Read your owners manual under "Understanding Your Instrument Panel" section for more information.

Poor Mileage

I would take the vehicle back to the dealer for a check. In city driving is seldom good but see what mileage you get on the open road. Stop and go kills mileage but my Pontiac G6 gets 26 in town and 39 on the freeway.
