you have the srarter solonoid connected wrong it does have the fender mounted solonoid right?
on the one side of the solonoid you connect JUST THE WIRE GOING TO THE STARTER
and on the other terminal the Battery POSITIVE CABLE AND ALL FUSEABLE LINKS

1978 super beetle won't crank. battery good. turn key, hear faint humming sound, nothing from engine

think you may have a faulty starter motor here ,this year vehicle will be of the pre engaged type so no seperate heavy duty solonoid unlike older cars ,i would expect a click of the solonoid and nothing if the starter has burnt out but its possible that the solonoid on top of the starter has failed but without a look myself and only a description i cannot diagnose correctly .Try some jump leads just to be sure it isnt a flat battery then check the engine earth to chassis cable then remove the starter motor and have it checked out

Where can I find a wiring diagram for a 1.9TDI Golf as I may need to replace the wires to the starter motor

So why do you need a wiring diagram ,their is only one wire from solonoid on starter to the relay ,which depending on model which you havent stated or year ,some have the relay under the bonnet in the power distribution box and some its under the dash ,easy job to do

I keep going through new starters. They work ok

sounds like a bad starter soloniod or a bad ignition switch .. most likely the solonoid if it hasnt been changed ... below is what it looks like and a couple places it can be purchased ... usually the contacts inside the solonoid wear to the point they just barely make contact .. sometimes they dont anymore ... on some solonoids you could just take it apart and rotate the contact so that unused contact area is now seen by the contactor ... .. the contacts are part of the bolts where power is connected ... a new solonoid isnt expensive so is probably the best bet ... if the contacts are worn then you will hear a click when you turn on the starter ...if yoiu dont hear a click then there could be an open coil in the solonoid or maybe a bad ignition/starter switch that operates that solonoid coil ... there are ways of junping the solonoid main contacts .. in this case the starter will run but not engage (you will get sparks) .. at least it checks the starter ... the other way is to provide power to the solonoid coil .. this should cause it to operate and engage the starter (make sure car is in park) .. if that works then suspect the ignition switch .. if it doesnt work or works once in a while then change the solonoid ...

Where is the starter solonoid located 04 aveo

You will need to verify if the starter solenoid is getting power when you are attempting to crank it. I dont have a diagram, but the clutch switch may be the problem if you must depress the clutch to start the engine.

1995 ford escort- starter cranks all the time

Check voltage at trigger wire going to the solenoid. There should not be any voltage there except when the key is in start positon...if there is the ignition switch may be bad.
