The battery light is on to warn the driver that the alternator is not charging the battery. If the light is still on you need to check the output of the alternator. It may still not be charging the battery.

Testimonial: "thanks the alternator was changed a mechanic and he said that he put the correct alternator and re-charged the battery. so maybe I will have him check the alternator again. thank you"

I reset my dodge grand caravan because the alarm kept going off when i changed battery.

There is not such thing as a 'hard reset' on a vehicle. That terminology is used on phones. Get your digital multimeter out. Check the voltage of the battery. Check you have full continuity between the ground post of the battery and a clean bolt on the engine. Test the output of the alternator.

Based on your original post, it prompted me to write this Tip on changing batteries. It was published 5 minutes ago. The grey square should have shown a cleaning brush.

2004 Mini Cooper S. I have changed the battery, the alternator and the belt. The battery light is not on except when I crank it does it need to be reset? Can I reset it myself? Please help.

Number 1 tip when changing batteries is to maintain 12 volts to the battery connectors during the change over. You can do this with a battery minder, a battery charger, jump leads or just a couple of lengths of wire.

You need to reset the security system immobilizer.

Reduce Engine light on; battery light on; low charge from charging system; vehicle won't run faster than 30 mph

You may have damaged the ECM with a power surge from shorting out the alternator. Try to reset the CPU program using a code reader and look for fault codes while you are at it

Hello and welcome to FixYa!

If the battery light is on, I strongly suggest that you have the battery charged. It can be an indication of a weak battery or a faulty alternator. If the battery light still on after charging then the problem will surely be on the alternator itself. If that's the case the alternator should be replaced to resolve the problem.

If the battery won't hold charge even on a new alternator then the problem will be on the battery itself. It surely is in the end of it's service life and replacement will be necessary.

You may try to reset it to by removing the positive battery connector, letting it sit for at least 5mins. then reconnect it again. This will reset the system and can get the battery light off.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

I have a 2004 ford explorer i changed my battery and alternator and my battery light and service engine soon lights wont go off

you might want to get a scan to see why the engine light is on. it would be unusual to burn the fusible links, but that's about all that could stop the alternator from charging. The links are along the wires from the battery to the alternator.

Replaced alternator because battery light appeared

When your battery light comes on it could be either your battery or alternator. When you change one its best to check the other as well at your local autoparts store. If the light came on you will need a scan tool that reads codes for cars newer than 1996. Another method that works well for cars is just disconnect the battery for a minute or so and connect it back and it should reset.

Battery light blinking

No, if the light is coming on it indicates that the alternator output is not adequate to recharge the battery. You have some sort of charging issue. Take the car to an autoparts store and have the alternator output checked. Most stores offer this service free of charge. You may have a short in the output wiring or some other problem. Hope this helped and best wishes.
