Question about GMC G2500

1 Answer

The alternator on our GMC Vandura with a V8 350 engine 5.7L locked and caught on fire. It messed up the plug in the back and by messed up I mean it was completely melted away. I purchased a new alternator and purchased a wire and plug set for the back at a GMC parts dealer. The problem though is that the wires on the new plug are all white and the two wires that have to be spliced with are two different colors, black and red. I have no clue which wire needs to splice with which wire on the new plug. The parts shop had no clue. I was told if I get the wrong wire in the wrong plug it could burn up the new alternator and I would have to buy a new one. Someone please help asap for it has put me into a position of not transportation and I need it for work.

I can help regarding the polarity on my GMC 2500 Van alternator....
Facing the rear of the alternator, the red wire attaches to the screw terminal on the left. The black (grd) attaches to the screw terminal on the right. The top has a connector with 2 spade terminals. - one (left tab) is the "r" or relay terminal and the right one is the 'f' or field terminal.

Does this help... Red on left and blk on right....

You might find the pieces of harness at a salvage yard. Also you can use wire connectors available at ant auto store. Use a good crimping tool and wrap the splices with electrical tape.

Can a large enough backfire threw the tailpipe throw off your timing

no
but the back fire could be caused by a failed timing belt or chain
a back fire is just exploding fuel in the exhaust or inlet manifold caused when a valve has not properly closed and fuel fire is allowed to escape

Need a wireing diagram

Ido not see a solution posted...but will offer thar your input voltage to the coil is low when cranking the engine...but when the key is restored to the run position, voltage is almost enough to fire a spark plug. Put a dc voltmeter on the 12 volt input terminal of the coil and confirm. If input voltage is ok then replace coil.

Low octain fuel or the rings on your 20 year old engine may be wearing and you age getting oil in the combustion chamber, effectively lowering the octain.

Have your mechanic do a compression test on your engine and wee what he or she thinks.

Firing order

If you pulled all the wires at once, you will need to go to a parts store and see if they can show you a diagram on how to reset the wires. Do not unhook the wires from the spark plugs at this point.

I think you have a short where the wiring harness plugs into the fuse block .I'ts located on the
firewall, just above the battery. Look at the lower left corner for signs of a hot spot, melting or
burned wire.
