On automatics the overdrive is actualy not in the trans at all
it's a small cluch in the torque converter and is not repairable, the only fix is to replace the torque converter, but then you say it races free as if not in drive?
That's a failure of the forward clutch

I'm afraid you need the trans overhaued, I recomend the dealership and NEVER places like Mr Transmission type, they'll overhaul it wihout any testing and cannot diagnose, just overhaul and overhaul ultil eother you're broke, or give up

In a 250 you most likely have either a C-6 (Aluminum case) or a FMX (Iron case) both are good transmissions and again the overdrive is the torque converter, be sure they replace it too

Good luck

I have a 91 f250 4x4 e40D transmission. Had it rebuild, then slip it in. It shifts 1 to 2 ok. But not shifting to 3rd & fourth

Being a 91, take it back. But this really depends on who you had build it. Shade tree guy, your probably going to eat it. Garage, take it back and make them fix it.

91 f250 diesel hesitates in drive

check fluid levels and color.. if brown and dirty, change fluid and filter in the trans pan refill to full and it should shift better..sounds like the filter is clogged up..also check vacuum lines from the pump to the transmission..fix any leaks

I have a 1981 F250 4x4 the rear end is 7.5 The tires are 235 85R16. I am missing the speedometer gear I need the tooth count and haven't been able to figure it out

Do you rembemer what color it was yellow is 19 teeth there is a 17 and ared one thats is a15. But ford has not changed this part for 30 years they cost about 2 dollars each.Dose your cable screw derictly in to the transmission or it there a part that screws into the trany first that the cable screws into that . The question says you have an 81 the problem says you have a 91 81 is to eraly for a speed sensor 91 would deffenetly have one 81 may have a reduction box its like a small gear box between the trany and the cable so they could use the same gears for all of the differant tranys and rear ends. But all of these gears will fit and work if its not the right one your speedometer will just be off check a measured mile and see if the odometer correct

I have a 2001 ford f250 powerstroke diesel was driving and transmision started to slip drove about 3 miles and now wont move forward at all but reverse works fine

Some of the Ford transmissions actually have an aluminum gear which will go out somewhere around 150 to 200 thousand miles. OR it could be really low on transmission fluid.

1st gear slipping at start. reverse and other gears fine. shifts between gears fine. if i start off slow it wont slip. 01 rodeo 4 cyl. also eng light has been on for 1 yr. has 120000 miles.

Have you checked the trani fluid ?
It could be slipping just enough to notice in 1st gear beause that is the most resistance..
A slip is a slip..
Or it could be that the bands are warn in only first gear - wich would cause damage before long..
Some shops give free estimates..
