Check your anitfreeze level. Is your heat guage high or close to the red line? Also have you checked your oil? To check antifreeze, remove cab when car is COLD make sure the coolant level is up to the top of the radiator. To check oil find the oil dipstick. (probably yellow) wipe clean once, reinstert fully, pull out again. check to make sure it is surely above the ADD mark. If it is at this mark, add 1 quart of oil.
If antifreeze is low, buy a jug of 50/50 antifreeze and get a funel and pour until radiator is full. Slowly pully it in little bits at a time, than slowly squueze and release raidator hose to burb the air bubbles out of the radiator hose.

If your temp guage is going up, than your came may need antifreeze. If it has fluid, than you may need to have thermostat replaced.

The Area You Need To Check In On The Passenger Side Of The Car And Is A Round Ball Looking thing

Make Sure The Car Is Cold And Unscrew The Cap And Fill To The Full Cold Line And Keep The Lid Off And Then Start The Car And Then Check The Fluid Level Again If It Is Full Then Screw The Cap On

Make Sure You Use VW Coolant Or An All Make All Model And Do NOT mix The Green Kind With The Red Pink Color Fluid That Comes With The Vw's

Flashing red light mean

A flashing red temperature indicator means your fluid level is low. The 99 beetle takes VW-specific antifreeze; do NOT buy standard green antifreeze for it! Fluid should be added to the round overflow bottle located on the passenger side corner of the engine compartment. Fill the container to the MAX line indicated on the bottle. I use Pentosin Pentofrost SF in mine, available at O'Reilly Auto Parts. As with most antifreeze products, mix it 1:1 with water before adding.

Cars do not normally "use" antifreeze, so if you keep having to add antifreeze, you should check for leaks. Heater hoses or radiator hoses are the most common places for leaks to occur, but the plastic thermostat housing is susceptible to cracking, so check that as well. Otherwise, you could be looking at a leaking radiator or heater core. Worst case scenario would be a leaking head gasket allowing fluid to escape into the cylinders, but that should be suspected only after everything else has been checked. The only other place you would ever see a fluid leak would be a bad freeze plug on the block, but those are very uncommon.

My 1998 vw bug temperature light came on red. I checked the coolent level and the tank was empty. I put water in it to get me home. Is water a bad idea? Now the temperature light comes on but now its...

vw beetles do not have a temp gauge so instead when the car is cold the light is blue at normal temp no light when over heating or low coolant red light and it beeps, you need the right coolant for your vw it is pink in color and some napas have it (Not DEX Cool) and you probably have a coolant leak, usually a plastic flang at rear of cylinder head goes bad

Coolant is low enough to trigger the sensor. There's a pressure leak somewhere in the system. The sensor is faulty.
