2001 VW Beetle A/C works sometimes. Problem seems to be the compress clutch is not engaging all the time. Seems like electrical circuit may not be completing to engage it. Any ideas.

Over time the clutch does go bad or burnout so get the system checked for flow and pressure to ensure the compressor is working ffirstly then the check valve for blockage or if the system needs to be recharged...if all this checks out then you may need to have it rebuilt or replaced...oh and the seals too can cause a similar problem if they are stretched.
are you getting power to the clutch compressor? if no power check the "wide open throttle" relay. the relay can go bad and disrupt power to the clutch. also check the voltage on the pressure transducer to make sure it is reading line pressure correctly, will need a scan tool to access this info.
my daughter has beetle and is having the same problem ( she has beetle 2001 and indicators will work for lttle while then stop or do 2 clicks and stop have checked fuses and they seem to be OK) so was wondering if you fix the problem and if so could you please tell me what it was my email address is [email protected]
Sounds like your fan speed switch. I had the same problem. The fan speed switch is the main power switch to your AC. VW only sells the whole cluster wholesale around 150.00. Let me know if you need instruction on removing cluster.
does it sound like there is any compression. remove cover on the right side that covers t-belt see if belt might have broken. if cooling system failed could have blow fuse for cooling fans. causing overheating.
AC will not work with temps are cold even when it is turned on. The air is colder cause the temp is colder. The AC cycles in hot weather because the AC charge is low and needs recharging. You will know this if you open the hood run the AC and you will hear the clicking sound of the AC compressor magnetic clutch. You can recharge it easily buy buying a compatible can of refrigerant. I suggest buying the kit with the gage so you don't overcharge the system which will cause freeze ups
Thats what it soulds like to me. The low pressure switch is what controls the clutch. Check to ensure you are topped off with refrigerant. If it is, get the low pressure switch replaced.
hi if its not been started for five years and it is trying to start but just won,t keep running get someone to tow you and jump start it because i suspect the compressions will be low due to a build up of damp carbon valves sticking all in all the seats on the head and valve will not be seating so if you persisist with the jump start it forces the valves onto the seats and will clear the debrie if it still won,t go check your compressions yates210456
Also check the freon level.
